We have a friend ethnic Hawaiian, four kids, good stay at home mom. She was diagnosed with stage two cervical cancer, Her husband lost his job. In the states she would be screwed big time. But in Hawaii she is getting good treatment.
I find it amazing and appalling that the truth of socialized medicine is that it works, every advanced country in the world except ours has it, and America ranks no where near the top in nearly every facet of healthcare, and yet, for reasons that must be due to mental health issues a number of Americans that call themselves conservatives think it doesn't.
It is like I drive my car to work and some conservative comes out of a building and says, "Your car doesn't run"
I reply, " I just drove it in here"
and the conservative says, "doesn't matter, your car doesn't run"
Whether or not it is a flawless program, the point is that as one should predict, the so called Republican leadership, and that is who was in attendance in Hawaii, are completely stupid (that is more than just ignorant) about existing healthcare programs. And what is stupider is that their stupidness (much like most economic arguments here on CD) are based purely on talking points, and not even very original ones at that.
So it's not socialized health care, it's employer provided health care. Got it.
And, it's not free. That's why so many parents dropped their employer-provided health care to go on Hawaii's 'free' universal health care for children, and crashed the plan. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/...n4527996.shtml
