The average price of gasoline fell nearly a penny the past week to $3.209 a gallon, the government reported Tuesday, the first drop in its nationwide average in five weeks.

The decline tracks recent drops reported separately by travel organization AAA, which said the U.S. average Tuesday was $3.201, down from the nominal record of $3.227 that AAA posted Thursday. The government says the inflation-adjusted record is $3.292, today's equivalent of $1.417 in 1981.

"We're on the verge of real relief," says Tom Kloza, senior analyst at the Oil Price Information Service. "We need to bury, at least for now, the notion of $4 gasoline and the notion that we just keep marching higher."

Retail gasoline prices follow wholesale prices, and those have been dropping, he says.

I'll believe gas prices going down when I see it.

We never had these problems until the wonderful Bush/Cheney administration came into office. It's amazing how so many Americans are blind to the damage these guys are doing. It's almost horrifying.

So what? They'll go down a penny or a nickel and then jump back up again at twice that rate. Do you honestly think we'll ever see low gas prices again?

Who did you blame for the gas prices & shortages in the 1970s? surely not Bush?

Didn't you know Bush and Carter are buds? They cooked up this whole thing as a college prank! It is now a game of one-upsmanship. Who can push prices higher, Republicans or Democrats. That is why we hold these fake elections so that each side gets a chance to play "Name that Gas Price". I guess they all got tired of "Who wants to be a Millionaire" since they all already are.

Could you explain the relationship between the gas price and Bush / Cheney?

Its almost horrifying! Do you realize how silly and down right ridiculous that is, you guys need to remember to add in Rumsfeld and ******** for all your problems, to mix it up a little! I am guessing that in this context "never" means the 8 years preceding the Bush/ Cheney years! How old are you jeremy, were you alive in the 70s, when there were literally lines, blocks long and you waited hours to get gas, and you couldnt buy a job! look up the term (stagflation) in your wikiwhatever, it should help! Rumsfeld/ ********, now there is a ticket!

It is a very difficult task for the gasoline marketers to set a price that maximizes their profits withour encouraging any alternatives that would cut consumption.

Did you guys thing Ologopoly pricing is easy?
