Same here, and I voted for him. I was in the Army in those days, so I had a bit of a different attitude then, one I am glad that I outgrew.
I was in High school then to young to vote. But I would've. Now looking back I can see what he did and what he could've done. I know what we need now more or less but getting it done well that will be the trick.
The cult of Beck would consider the real (not the revisionist) Reagan a bleeding heart pinko by their fringe standards.
It is downright criminal the lies the cult of Beck is spreading about Reagan.
Old Man Gip may have talked a lot of smack but he was no wingnut ideologue, too bad the same can't be said of the lunatic fringe cult of Beck that have dragged his party's credibility through the mud.
"So the "Reagan Revolution" increased the size of government by 92 percent in dollar terms and reduced it by a whopping 0.4 percent as a share of GDP.
The deficit rose from 4.9 percent of GDP to 5.8 percent. The national debt rose from $909 billion to 2.6 trillion. (By contrast, under Democrat Bill Clinton, federal spending dropped from 22.1 percent of the economy to 18.4 percent – a drop of more than five percent.)
But the Republican theory that cutting taxes would force the government to cut spending was not borne out."

They made that initial deep tax cut, and I even knew liberals who were excited about it, but they had to shore it up by adding more gas tax and the like, a couple of years later. In fact, they made somewhere around 10 or 11 tax increases, during that administration. Not to mention, wages were the pits, in the 80s.

Yes, the Highway Revenue Act of 1982; it increased the gasoline and diesel tax by 5¢ for five years. Clinton enacted a similar tax, the Surface Transportation Revenue Act of 1998, which added an addition 18¢ tax on gasoline, 24¢ on diesel, and more taxes on other fuels through 2003. It was credited with sending the budget into surplus.
And indeed there were several tax cuts and tax increases throughout the 80s. Several of them also refined the tax code from more than a dozen brackets to only 3 or 4. Most of the lowest income brackets were eliminated completely, thus exempting most of the working poor from income taxes (this was reversed in 1993).
As for real wages, they had been stagnant from about 1976-1985 before they began to rise again. They fell from 1992-1996 before rising with the Dot Com bubble.

Good info, Thanks. I was busy playing soldier them and was sort of off in my own world (not very politically minded), so a lot of the political nuances of that era slipped by me (or perhaps I slipped by it). I voted Reagan by the way, and have mixed feelings about it today.

The constitution is a document dedicated to restraining government. So reagan was intune with the founding fathers. Not a bad place to be.Conservatives believe in equality of opportunity, while liberals believe in equality of outcome.Presidents get too much credit when things go well, and too much blame when they don't.Congress is still the keeper of the bucks.

What he believed and what he did were two diferent things. What he did was to start the taking of power from the poeple and the giving of it to the rich corperations.
What he did was revive the American economy from the jimmy carter recession, defeated communism around the world and raised the standard of living for ALL americans across the board, independent of race, sex and class.
He was elected twice, winning forty-four states from incumbent jimmy carter in 1980, and forty-nine states in 1984, the largest landslide in presidential election history. He cut taxes, ended inflation and presided over Ninty-six consecutive months of economic growth(1982-1990) with the stock market tripling in value during his administration.
I humbley respect your opinion on reagan and do not know your politics and beliefs, but i believe reagan empowered people and it is the rich corporations that provide the jobs for us.
During the Reagan administration, tax-payers were five times more likely to increase their incomes than to have them fall. All income groups experienced real income gains.Under carter only the top 1 per cent grew. The rich got richer under carter not reagan.
From 1983-1989 the total population under the poverty line decreased by3.8 million people, with unprecedented numbers of people entering the workforce. This is only my opinion. I do try not to let facts get in the way i believe.

but to me, the most important think he did was to bring back patiotism to the American people. He made us proud to be Americans because he was proud of his country..

What he Reagan did was to start the bull market rally http://longwavegroup.com/publications/special_editions/2009/pdf/091222_Dow1000.pdf That sets up the winter depression. He started wealth transfer from the middle class to the rich. The tripleing of the dow was setting up a crash that was bigger. The peek of the dow was 15X its starting point. That will be followed by an even bigger crash. Reagan did not engage in wealth creation he engaged in wealth redistribution. http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/500/total-credit-debt-percentage-gdp.jpg We are now looking at a bigger crash than was the great depression. Look at 1933 and 1981 and today.
If he had chosen to take us into an economic depression then we would be done with it, it would have been mild and we would be having sustainable economic growth now. Politics has nothing to do with this. The boom was fueled by credit we were spending more than we were making. It was setting us up for the crash that is happening now.
