The rumor was that in 2010, Volkswagen would be releasing a one-seater car with a fuel economy of 258 miles to the gallon costing just $600 each.

If it sounds too good to be true that’s because it is.

But the truth of the matter is still pretty interesting.
...
It seats 2 people and is made from carbon fiber so it’s super light at just 290 kg or 638 pounds ... The prototype has a single-cylinder diesel engine, anti lock brakes, driver's airbag and an electronic stability program. It holds 6.5 liters or 1.72 gallons of gasoline and does, in fact get 258 miles per gallon with a top speed of around 74 miles per hour.
...
but the price tag is not going to be $600. Reports say it will be more like $25,900 and that VW will be making a limited number for release in 2010.
...
you would need less than 10 gallons of gas to drive from Los Angeles to New York.
Pretty cool stuff. I wonder if it'll be approved for sale in the U.S. A lot of the tin can cars they have in Europe don't meet our safety standards.

Looks pretty interesting. Wonder if it will pass all the US government mandated safety and emmissions requirements? I also wonder how it will do in snow?

I've often wondered if all the gas guzzling SUV's shoved down the American consumers throats (think soccer mom) were designed not only for maximum room/comfort (to say nothing of fuel consumption) but to ultimately make brilliant cars like this VW far too unsafe for widespread use? I am pleased to see more and more "micro cars" on the road. Interesting that the first one was made in America in the 1930's I believe. These micro cars are needed like never before, just turn it into a balloon on contact with an SUV/monster pick up/Hummer

why do they insist on one/two seaters....why not design a family sized care that can carry more than ONE bag of groceries

258 mille/gallon .....great

25k cost.....not so great

2 seater.......sucks....would be fine as my comuter car,,, but not worth it if I cant fit the family

top speed 74......ok...but would like a little passing power, kick it up to 81 and you will have it

638 lbs......cool...but....what kind of tires, and how is it on ice, snow and high winds

and why isnt the government motors (GM) making this?????

Good question. If GM would crank out something like this they'd be outta the poor house in no time

I think a two-seater ultra-high MPG car would sell well. Many people would use it for their commutes as a daily driver. Many of the new fully electrics are small but with up to 100-mile ranges, more than enough for most commuters. Many families, however, would surely keep a minivan or SUV on hand as a second car, though.

Smart cars and similar are like rolling coffins. No thanks. I prefer me and my families safety to anything else.

A $25,000 commuter car would not sell in my opinion. Drop $15,000 off of it then I would consider it for a commuter car.

$25,900 is a fair deal over time...would come down.... But I agree about the "little light cars - rolling coffins" comment, and top speed 74? hmmm....

And when it gets hit by a 2-ton Toyota Sienna minivan, the result is what....?

Light weight is a well-known way of increasing your gas mileage. But it has, shall we say, certain downsides.

I wouldn't drive one if it got infinite gas mileage. This car is a complete non-starter.
