The pope's brother said in a newspaper interview that he slapped pupils across the face after he took over a renowned German boys' choir in the 1960s. He also said he was aware of allegations of physical abuse at an elementary school linked to the choir, but did nothing about it.

It's incredible to think about how much the Catholic Church has covered up or gotten away with over the decades.

Please, this is the least of the Catholic Church's problems or cover-up's over it's approx. 1,900 year history. The Church has been covering up and doing these things or things like them for a millenia or more.

Slapping students? Understand that in some times and places even parents were very supportive of this kind of thing. You don't have to necessarily "cover up' somthing that everyone approves of.

The real question is...did he slap them in the face before...or after...he sexually molested them? No Catholic priest should be trusted, IMO.

Very true. I saw the Vice Principal of my Catholic high school slap a student's face in his office. This was in America in 1987. Everyone thought the kid deserved it, probably including him. There wasn't the slightest objection raised, to my knowledge, by the parents or anyone else. That was the way it was, and frankly I'm glad it was.

Boy have things changed ha? So much was accepted then, but times have changed. You cannot even in play slap your child these days, you may get picked up, for childe abuse.

The cult of Catholicism proves itself useless again.

Things have changed, but not for the better. What too few people realize is that while some deranged social workers and prosecutors may consider a spanking or a slap child abuse, juries almost never do. Parents who are charged get intimidated into plea bargaining their rights away, and that's why we've gotten to where we have.

Compared to what I know was done at the schools when my parents and grandparents and generations before them...a slap in the face is pretty mild. I think this article is much ado about nothing.
