I've found this as well. If you go after them with substance, they respond by trying to corral you into a small ideological box with a tight label and ignore the substance.
It is a long-used tool of the intellectually feable. By relegating someone to a position of "other", they no longer have to entertain their ideas because they are able to be deemed invalid due to the label placed on them by others.
The Republicans have used this for decades, turning the phrase "socialist" against anyone different from themselves and making it simple for people who do not generally think for themselves to relegate complex thinkers to simple stereotypes.

When confronted with a policy, idea, party, elected official, or even person you disagree, simply call them a Socialist, Marxist, or Communist. Works like a charm. No need to read up or educate yourself on a subject, just pull out the old "Socialist!!" card. Do you have a limited understanding of what Socialism or Marxism is, no worries, you don't need to know. All you have to do is to remember this basic rule, Nationalization = Communism. Post office = Communist, Police Department = Communist, Fire Dept. = Communist, Public Schools = Communist. When Karl Marx wrote hundreds of pages explaining Communism, he was simply long winded. Sure, there are hundreds of books hundreds of pages thick explaining Socialism, Marxism, and Communism, but it's all overkill.
This rules any need for meaningful debate and puts the opponent in a defense mode. Forcing your opponent to defend themselves against baseless charges directs any attention away from the real issue.
As good as this rule is, it is not flawless, any Freshman political science major will see through your ruse, worry not, you can resort to rule # 2, TBA. No doubt some will employ rule #2 in this thread.
