IMHO, well said... though I think the "going to socialism" thing happened in late 70s (Trudeau was PM from 68 to 84 [with a tiny break in 79-80])...
there is a lot less freedom in Canada, and I would say that the more liberal attitude is at least in part related to the fact that the gov't will bail people out... take the whole "baby out of wedlock" scenario... the gov't will provide subsidized place to live, welfare, daycare, medical care, schooling... I find it very rare that people tie the "what I get" with "where does it come from originally", so it's very easy to think that you get whatever you need without thinking that somebody (or possibly you at some point) will have to work for it for about 5-6 months out of every year...
