Our shortage of doctors mostly has to do with an artificial barrier.
Currently there is a cap on the number of doctors the United States we can produce.
We also lose out on doctors because the cost of medical school is so high. There is no reason we can't expand the program where the government forgives student loans in exchange for working in a certain area for a few years.
To get more general practitioners (which we need more of), the government can arrange to pay for the person's medical training and give them a bonus of say $50-75K a year. Sure it won't completely close the gap between specialists and general practitioners but it's a start.
And where do you think this government money is coming from? The tooth fairy? WE ALREADY ARE SPENDING MONEY WE DON'T HAVE. Why are you people always looking for a handout?
BTW, it is easier for this country to hire medical professionals (RNs, GPs etc) from countries such as the Philippines and India, which is currently happening, in order to fill the shortage we CURRENTLY have, not to mention the one that will take place once Obamacare comes into play.

I'm not looking for a handout. There is no reason our taxes can't provide this. We're too busy wasting money on two useless wars and giving subsidies to companies that don't need them. We're letting the rich game the tax system and have all sorts of tax shelters.
It's possible to do these things once you end the two wars, raise taxes (and they need to be raised...), and eliminate all these corporate giveaways.

yes there is
look at the numbers the more costly medicare or even the less costly medicaid....go ahead look at the numbers
we spend 300 BILLION dollars on mediciad...to cover (at 100%) about 30 million (some say 25 million some say 35 million).....transfer that number to 320 million people (our population) the cost would be about 3 TRILLION A YEAR
we spend 500 BILLION dollars on medicare(the more costly seniors) to cover about 40 million seniors....transfer that number to cover the 320 million people the cost would be 4 TRILLION to partially cover
see the point...no matter how you slice it,, you are looking at at least 2 trillion to possible 4 trillion A YEAR.......divide by the 120 millin tax payers and you are looking at an ANNUAL TAX BILL of 20,000-30,000 PER TAXPAYER.........that's 3-5 times what you make purple

The system is not great, in my opinion. It hasn't been since the Nixon era when HMOs and PPOs were pushed upon is, thereby severing the doctor/patient direct link, especially the breaking of the financial link.
And for those who want to flame me as being a socialist or whatnot, maybe you should listen to Ron Paul's (a doctor himself who practiced medicine before the Nixon era) take on the situation. I don't agree with him 100% on all points, but he really nails certain things, like identifying when the doctor-patient link was (mostly) broken and how that has factored into the mess we see today.
