Actually, it is often blacks who do most of the "whinning!" Not only do they have their civil rights, but they have affirmative action, and special quota systems to insure they are given a hand up as well; even when they don't deserve it. Special scholarships based on minority status. It is precisely these types of subsidies which backfire onto the gay community. Gay people would never promote the idea of affirmative action, or quotas systems within their own community; we consider this degrading. Blacks should be embarrased to have such special treatment; it suggests that without it, blacks just can not compete.
For your information, long before slavery, long before there was a Jew, homosexuals existed. Homosexuals have existed on this planet since the beginning of the human race. You can read about it in sanskrit, or view hierogliphic images created during ancient times. We are apart of every community. So many of the gay people in history who have contributed, have been broadbrushed as heterosexual.
As a people, gays are still struggling for a shred of equality. There are still 37 states which permit discrimination against homosexual people for any reason. Gays are still fired, have their children taken away, and banished from their churches. To ask for something as simple as the right to legally marry is not asking a lot whatsoever.
Many blacks get angry about issues which were prevalent decades ago, or sometimes hundreds of years ago, which no longer exist. The legacy of slavery, allowed blacks who live in this country, the best quality of life in the world. I often wonder if blacks every consider what life would be like if their ancestry had remained in Africa? Away from all the conveniences we often take for granted. The time has come, to get over it.
So many Blacks insist on carrying this so-called baggage like Henry Louis Gates; sadly behaving beligerantly toward police officers is acceptable. The media crawling all of it, to the point where it reaches the president within a 24 hour period. Apparently blacks do have a lot of power, when people like Al Sharpton, who is a "nobody" can garnish so much attention. The only time gays garnish any attention is when the media needs ratings in turn sensationalizing some of our issues out of proportion.
While you mention that blacks were lynched and murdered; gays were forced to live in exile, they had to remain invisible to ensure their survival. We often lived in solitude or severely ostracized, or due to social control, attempted to live as heterosexuals do, but not very happily. Unlike blacks, we had the benefit (and the curse) of being "invisible." Look at the incredible price we paid for this invisibility. People often think we don't exist. We have only had negative images us in the media. It is these images that taught heterosexual people what to think about gays; and taught gays what to think about themselves. Even today, the images portrayed are still very negative; you never see a gay hero. Blacks are often the heroes in any of the crime dramas on today.
