Most of the PIIGS are single payer and their off balance sheet debts are sky high.
They cannot afford it. What happens when your only source of insurace has no money and has to cut back ? The biggest monopoly of them all is the government.
Once you go down that path..there is no return trip.
Medicare is sky high because it deals with the elderly and disabled. Of course it's going to cost a lot.
The one that takes care of military members...of course it will be high. We're treating people who have war wounds. Of course their costs will be high.
There are some who argue Medicare is not single payer:
I support an improved Medicare that includes everyone. We'd have one single health care system instead of all these different programs.
I will give a bone to Conservatives and say if you want private health insurance, you can have it.
Quote:
Multi-Payer System (or Single Payer Plus Private Supplement) Basic Concept: Every citizen has access to health care coverage through a single-payer system. However, individuals and/or employers have the ability to purchase insurance privately. Advantages:
• Ensures that everyone will receive health care coverage while giving people the option of remaining with their current insurance plan if they desire.
• Most of the benefits of a single-payer system would still apply. Administrative costs would decrease, physician and patients would have autonomy, and the profit-motive would be removed from the single-payer part of the system.
• Is politically favorable because it does not eliminate private insurance companies, and continues the perception of choice in health care. Disadvantages:
• Because it incorporates single payer, it has many of the same disadvantages. These include vulnerability to the political climate, loss of private sector jobs, potential overspending by physicians, and a possible slowdown in technological advancement.
• Multi payer does not completely remove the profit motive in health care. Those who choose to pursue privately financed health care plans may be susceptible to the many problems that plague the current system.
That's because they don't cover medical procedures that actually costs money..... It's called rationing !!!!
Rationing will always happen. Did you actually read the links or is this just some right-wing reflex where you just say, "IT'S RATIONING!!"
Health insurance companies ration as well but I guess because they do it in the name of profit, that's okay?
LOOK at the numbers; look at the cost of our current systems: the more costly medicare; or even the less costly medicaid....go ahead look at the numbers
1. MEDICARE currently covers (only partially, it is not 100% coverage, therefore not considered a singlepayer because you have to buy a suplemental insurance) about 40 million (about 1/7th of the population) seniors and has an ANNUAL COST of 500 BILLION dollars.............................to cover all, would cost anywhere from $2.5-4.5 trillion A YEAR..............
2. we spend 300 BILLION dollars on MEDICAID( our singe/duel payer system) ...to cover (at 100%) about 30 million (most esitmates are between 25 million and 35 million).....transfer that number to 320 million people (our population) the cost would be about 3 TRILLION A YEAR...................
NOW lets look at what the taxpayer would expect:
divide those numbers (2.5 trillion to 4.5 trillion) by the 120 million taxpayers(according to the IRS)...that's an average tax bill of $20,000-38,000 EACH HOUSEHOLD, EACH YEAR, an always rising.......can you afford that,,, I certainly cant.... and a heck of a lot especially if you dont go to a docotor but once a year.....is that what they want a once a year doctor bill for $20,000plus
THAT'S the COST of single payer, through OUR government

It's apparent you don't have a clue WHY its so much less expensive as you would like to believe ! I'll take the minimal rationing of a private sector system in the name of a unbelievable 2% profit any day over what the rationing the gov's of the world have implemented running their HC systems in the name of socialism ! Freedom isn't free...... but it's still WAY cheaper than socialism !
How blind you are to think this gov is going to be any different in the end ?! Your thinking is the definition of insanity ! Expecting a different result from the same process over and over again.....
And you act like an industry that has catapulted medical science and care to the highest levels in the world in the shortest amount of time possible along with the HUGE R&D investments made by these organizations LEADING THE WORLD IN MEDICAL SCIENCE making a whopping 2% profit margin is out of line with the level of care offered or something......
You want medical costs to come down...... STOP ASKING FOR, EXPECTING & DEMANDING MEDICAL SCIENCE ADVANCEMENT ! Would you work for free, devote your personal resources and life to advance it ???? Why should someone else for YOUR benefit....... But you expect gov to make people work for free though right ?
Freakin freeloaders......

I would like a single-payer health care system similar to Canada's in which people pay a monthly premium for their health care.
As I've said earlier, I'm willing to compromise with Conservatives and give people the choice to buy private health insurance if they want it.
The reason why it's less expensive is because the administrative costs are much lower in Medicare than private health insurance. The administrative costs for private health insurance is 30%!!
How have health insurance industries made advancements in medical science? All health insurance companies do is skim profit, push paper, and deny claims. They also give their CEOs million dollar salaries.

ok the admin cost are mch cheaper with medicare

and thats with the "lower admin costs"
is that what you are asking for purple???? at 19 years old you WANT a 20k-40k taxbill every year?????? mostlikely more than you make or close (average salery is 48k)??????????
THAT'S the COST of single payer, through OUR government
CURRENTLY we have over 12 trillion dollars worth of debt,, and going up by at least 1 trillion a year....shall we add another 2-3trillion to that yearly......what happens when the iou comes due?????????????????????????????????????
How have health insurance industries made advancements in medical science? All health insurance companies do is skim profit, push paper, and deny claims. They also give their CEOs million dollar salaries.
Ooooooooooo... Ahhhhhhh..... a big whopping 2% profit those greedy insurance companies are making providing you with the medical advancements you so desire from companies that invest BILLIONS R&Ding them..... Gov won't come close to offering you what the private sector can and does. History speaks for itself.
Move to Canada then..... problem solved for you. They don't deny ANY claims up there right..... Most can't get to the point of actually making a claim. That too helps keep costs down.
I agree true insurance reform is needed. Finding a way to get the private sector to reduce costs is a starting point.... maybe increasing competition within the private sector would allow for them to trim admin costs to compete with one another ...... Na, can't do that, that would actually work !
How about we have YOUR salary regulated by the gov based on what they think it should be ? Would that work for you ? How long before that power is turned on you and YOU are the target group of the gov when it comes to the pay YOU negotiate for yourself with your work?
You act like you don't have the same opportunity to do the same as every CEO in the world has ? God damn those people that actually work hard and succeed in life..... They don't deserve it and the gov should take it away and give it to you..... is that about right ?
