Well, lets see what we can do: we can close all the military installations and bring all the soldiers home. Once they are here and unemployed, the rest of us who still have jobs tell our employers to fire us and to give our jobs to the now unemployed military members. Does that sound like a good deal?

Who said anything about kicking them out the military? I said bring them home and station them on our nation's border with Mexico to stop the drug gang violence from continuing to spill over into America and that includes the Mexican military crossing into America.
There is a reason that we have so many bases overseas and it is called defense. I know, you are saying to yourself right now "But they can defend America here!", and you care only partly correct. Let me explain, in the years after World War 2 the United States became a super power both militarily and economically, the reason for this is that we were the one allied nation that had not been significantly damaged during the war.
Here is an example, this was Berlin after World War 2.
It was at this time that the United States military and political leaders realized that the best way to protect our country was to station troops overseas so any future fighting would take place on soil other than our own.
While that might seem unnecessary today, you still must continue to maintain this defense in case it become necessary in the future. To put it in terms that are easier for the average person to understand, just because no one tried to steal your car today, does not mean it is okay to leave it unlocked tomorrow. The smart decision is to keep locking your doors everyday, and the smart decision militarily is to keep those bases open overseas.
Except that we have members of the Mexican military crossing our nation's border on a regular basis right now and shooting at our nation's border patrol. The border patrol isn't equipt to handle that kind of fire power.

I will caveat what I voted and say that we should only pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan when the time is right and they don't have to worry about extremists taking control of the country.
Would you be willing to write to your state's senators and representatives on this issue? Propose it as a spending cutting measure as well as a way to introduce tax revenue into state and local economies if those troops are brought home and spend money here instead of overseas.
A lot of troops WANT to be stationed overseas. There are entire local economies in Europe built up around US American military bases and I'm no expert on economy but "pulling out" would be damaging for more than the local economy over there. US Military Installations in Europe are critical. A lot of soldiers actually volunteer to be stationed there. A lot of troops are deployed from there. A lot of soldiers return from combat to their families there.

No, it doesn't sound like a good deal. Anyone rallying for closing overseas bases clearly has not looked at a map of the world of where all our troops currently are and WHY. Individuals join the military for a reason. Do they like being on hardship tours or being deployed for 15 months, no, probably not. Do some of them enjoy being deployed and based overseas, yes. Closing overseas bases is a stupid idea, period. As long as we are all alive we will have military. And having that military, we need the posts to support the efforts and troops. Closing overseas bases would be a form of suicide. If you're anti military, this discussion is not for you. The current state of the world calls for it.

Base consolidation should be the priority both foreign and domestic.
1. The mission of the U.S. military is NOT to provide jobs for Americans or foreign nations.
2. The mission of the U.S. military is NOT to prop up the economies of American or foreign communities.
3. The mission of the U.S. military is to defend the assets and interests of the United States from foreign aggression, and whether a base closes or not should be based solely on that.
Unfortunately, the concept of "interests" is as muddy as the concept of "assets" is clear, and has come to include points 1 and 2 above.
IMO, the mission of the U.S. military needs to be reviewed and most likely re-focused before any consolidation of bases is considered.

Protecting the borders would be fine, but we already have "weekend-warriors" (military members) who can do that. We are talking about several thousand military members overseas (AF, Army, Marines, special forces, Seals, Navy, and the Guard). All of these on top of other active military members, Guard, and everything else already here.
