The passing of the Patriot Act sort of put the nail in the coffin...don't you think?

It was a serious expansion of federal power, no doubt about that. It doesn't justify the complacency to allow additional nails being added. HC takover is another nail driven in hard.

Personally I think we are about to see another pendullum swing just like we have before.

What sort of "exceptional freedom" do we have here?

The right to lose your business and home because of a catastrophic illness suffered by yourself or a loved one? The right to pay more per capita for a healthcare system that is less efficient? The right to pay out the nose for healthcare so that the doctor can open from 10-3 with an hour lunch and golf on Fridays?

Or does the article mean "exceptional freedom" that US insurance companies have -- to deny contractual benefits bought and paid for, to deny healthcare access to those with pre-existing conditions?

Apparently if you have to ask silly questions like the talking points you put forward you didn't read the article linked. You have the exceptional freedom to be stupid: please stop abusing it.

No, it's not. the job of the government mainly includes national defense, taxing imports, delivering the mail, and ensuring trade continues between states.

It's not the government's job to look out for individuals. That silly, dangerous notion comes out of later socialist/communist ways of thinking, not the libertarian ideology found in our Constitution.

It's going to be shock to some and heart failing to others when the turn down yonder way up the road is Socialism. and not what they're used to. Capitalism. gnashing of teeth.

Show me the dependence in America in the 1950's. Top tax rate was 91% http://symonsez.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/top_marginal_income_tax_rate_1913-2003.jpg

The bottom works for their money not getting a hand out. Up minimum wage.

This would mean that “they” would have less “need” for a hand out than they do now.

Reagan did wealth redistribution with his tax cuts on the top end. And we have been doing the same thing ever sense.

The freedom to do this:
I agree that you should have the right to do that but why would you want to do that? Why would you want to disrespect and destroy the symbol of the nation that you were birthed in or have adopted? Why would you want to attack the symbol of your own land? Remember that flag flies over the country no matter who is in charge. It flew when Lincoln freed the slaves and put down the south. It flew when Reagan was there as well as JFK and now Obama. It is not a symbol of the President or any political party. It is a symbol of the country you live in and the ideals we should aspire to.
