There is a painful condition caused by a worm called the Guinea worm disease. It is a parasite that after being infected can emerge anywhere from your body and be up to 3' in length. It is painful and had affected millions at one point.

Former President Carter has taken the lead in eradicating this problem and after years they are down to only a thousand cases or so left. mostly in the Sudan.

That is a success! The elimination of a disease in the world.

This is a fine example of a humanitarian.

I agree completely. Carter was a failure as president, following a conservative policy of supporting dictators like Pahlavi and establishing the death penalty for marijuana smokers (paraquat), but he has been a great ex-president.

Carter has set the bar high for doing good work after leaving office.

This was not a thread about his presidency. but curious you would take those 2 points as his failures. Paraquat was sprayed on an illegal substance so those that broke the law suffered... solution don't break the law
The Shah was an inherited issue to Carter. Persia celebrated 2500 hundred years of continuous monarchy while the Shah was in power. All American presidents had kept good relations with this government. The shah brought about a modernization which included things like suffrage to women and the religious conservatives revolted against the change, it wasn't caused or remotely related to Carter. It simply happened under his watch and the taking of an American embassy occurred. The net result were all hostages lived....
The military action taken and bungled by our special forces was the only deaths in the incident. If the military performed better and the planned worked you would praise Carter, even if 1/2 the hostages died in the process.... instead they come home safe and you say failure... I think we need new standards of success, and Bravado and testosterone has no part.

Do you recall Begin and Sadat brought to the Peace table by... Carter? This alone keeps his term from being a failure.

But again it is all about his work today.

Whether you want to question his presidency or not is another thing but his charity and humanitarian work are unrivaled by any current or former politician.

What a truly good man. And how differently he has lived out his post-Presidency than those who have used that title to make millions in speaking engagements.

If only he could keep his very large mouth shut when it comes to politics. Every few months he pops up with a huge embarressment to the country. He nees to keep his opinions to himself so he doesn't look stupid. Carter is just stupid, whereas Obama is pure EVIL..!

He has done a lot of good, but if you think he hasn't made millions by speaking engagements you need to rethink that?? Of course he has, he isn't stupid..he does need to shut up from time to time.
