California lawmakers narrowly advanced a bill Tuesday that would repeal a state law designed to find the causes and cures of homosexuality. The law, written in 1950, classifies homosexuals as "sexual deviants" and requires the state Department of Mental Health to conduct research on "deviations conducive to sex crimes against children." The research would be used to help identify potential sex offenders.
The Associated Press: Calif. considers repealing law to study, cure gays

In 60 years the tide has changed to the degree that what was considered a deviant behavior is now considered perfectly natural.

Is this progress?

Being Gay is not a disease, and, therefore does not need a "cure."

Yes it is progress. Sadly, there are people that would still like to keep the law on the books.

People fear what is different. Just like people once thought praying to a certain god made the sun go up and down, or their plants grow, the further science progresses the less need there is for outdated thoughts and programs.

What was once thought 'deviant' behavior (because of fear of the unknown and unrelateable) is now considered more socially acceptable, and the laws/rules should change to reflect that.

When my dad was in grammar school, being left handed was thought to be deviant and unacceptable. He still wears a nice small scar from being smacked on the hand with a metal edged ruler because he was 'using the wrong hand'. Luckily, things have changed....

It is an abnormality though. One that may be caused from genetic disorders, chemical imbalances, social influence or a combination of them.

Well, in terms of spending taxable income within a state that is broke, I would agree.

As for no need for one, I guess it depends on how we view many other types of abnormalities that are often socially dysfunctional.

Someting that is devient remains devient. It doesn't change just because some decide to accept devience.
