Now that tomorrow is tax day, who actually paid more in income taxes in 2009 than in 2008? And if so, why?

Just the top highest earners.

Most will get back money all they had withheld, plus.

I've always received a refund. They were never much, seldom over $200.
My income went from $29,000 in 2008 to $36,000 in 2009.
Something drastic happened with taxes. For 2009 I have to pay $1,567.

Tax returns arent complete yet but it looks like I'll pay taxes this year for the first time in 8 years.

Everyone losing their homes, people scared their stocks would become worthless and paying premiums to insure them, more people buying online, more people looking for stable safe investments. Its been a FABULOUS year

Technically I did overall, because I made more money.

But I got more back this year than last because of mortgage interest and property tax deductions, and tax credits for energy efficient improvements.

Just remember that the size of your refund has nothing to do with whether your taxes went up or down. The way you know the amount of your taxes is by looking at the line on your tax return that says what your taxes are.

When I get done I suspect that my taxes will be lower this year than last year, both because I took advantage of the opportunity not to take a required distribution from an inherited IRA and because I took a capital loss on some Citibank bonds. Consequently, when it's all done I suspect my income will be a bit lower for 2009, even though our salaries have gone up.

Taxes went up, refund went up. Made more money, but bought a house (took the tax credit earlier) and got the interest deduction and got that tax credit for energy efficient stuff (windows/appliances/etc).

Next year, taxes will go up and refund down most likely Just had my first kid, but I hear something about Obama doing away with the child tax credit?
