I'm not sure Obama believes in big government. His opposition has to paint him into that corner for their own self interest, but I think he just sees the role government needs to play. You can't build a lot of industries without some entity picking up the tab for building the public infrastructure to serve those industries. That entity is usually government. You also can't expect a market to work without regulations in place to keep it from destroying itself.

As far as I can tell, Obama's more of a corporatist. He just knows how to use government as a tool to help those corporations.
