Yeah, that ^ pretty much. I don't care about "being able" to use it. I already can. I never use it outside of crude jokes amongst friends who know I'm not some white supremacist. Why? Because using it as an insult is for neanderthals. I'll insult someone based on his behavior or attitude, not his race.
But it is pretty damn hypocritical that if some black guy calls another black guy (or frankly any guy) "my *****" then most people don't bat an eyelid but if I did that then at best I would get strange looks and at worst I'd get my ass kicked.
So, I have been wondering this for a little while. The whole n__ word argument was blown out of proportion some years back. Black leaders (whoever and whereever they are) and Bill Cosby, supposedly were trying to ban the word, telling people not to use it. Anywho, I would always hear whites saying, "well, I can't use that word, I can't say that, only you can". They would complain that they don't know when to use it, who to use it to, where, all that. Whites, that I know personally, and my boss, specifically said, "the word shouldn't be allowed to be used, it is a hurtful word and it has a horrible history".
Now, I understand and agree that the word has a horrible history, but whocares?? Why do white people want to be able to say this word?? That is what I don't understand. What is the big deal?? And why because white people "can't" say it (they can say what they want really), should the word be banned from existence?? Also, of all the issues in the black community to give a damn about, why this one??
Thanks, my white peeps )
A word is a word. I don't use it, just like there are many derogatory words I won't use. If YOU want to use it, go ahead.
Why though? It's not as if it's the ONLY word someone uses. In fact, someone who uses it has a vocabulary that is one word greater than you ehh?
I do not need to use my words to denigrate another. I don't use ebonics either, call me a purist. You confuse lack of use with ignorance of. I suggest others that use the word reach or exceed me then the question will be mute.
I will defer to a link that summarizes the importance of language and its command.

There are many ethnic slurs that depict a person of low class, no manners, and other bad social traits. ALL but the N word are allowed, I can type cracker, white trash, red neck, trailer trash and any other slur against whites and it won't be censored. I cannot type the N word.
When I worked in the slums of Wash, D.C my best friend and co-worker was black. Many times we would encounter a person I describe above and he would say, "I hate those damn N's. They give the rest of us a bad name.
To lump all blacks into the N category is wrong but, there are those that it does apply to, just as the other ethnic names apply to a certain segment of each group.
Because there are some people, under some circumstances, for whom it is the best word available to describe them. If that were not the case, black people would not use the word, either.
Agreed.
I member a movie where a lawyer, in court, called someone an as.h..e. the judge wanted to hold him in contempt and gave him one day to explain.
The lawyer came back with a great explanation that sometimes that is the only word that describes perfectly what the person is.
I don't want the ability to use the N word. I would have no problem with banning it altogether, even by rap artists.
