In Colorado Springs they are turning off a third of their streetlights. You can "adopt" one for $75.

Ocean City, MD is ending curbside recycling.

An Ohio judge told citizens they might want to arm themselves since sheriff's deputies have been cut in half.

Budget shortfalls force cities to make cuts - latimes.com

And some want the cities to be bailed out.

"congressional Democrats are pushing a $100-billion bill that would provide $75billion in federal aid to help cities and counties preserve jobs. The bill, which has gained 151 cosponsors in the House, also provides an additional $23 billion to help preserve teachers' jobs. Most of the remainder would go to aid police and fire departments."

Hey, here's an idea --- bigger class sizes. Cut administrative jobs. Stop feeding the kids who come to school. That's not your job.

Make cuts in public transportation. Less trains and buses. So they wait 20 minutes for the next train instead of 5 - 10 minutes.

How about the mayors throwing no shindigs? Let the sports teams play in old stadiums/arenas.

Where is the federal aid money coming from, Congressional Democrats? I thought we were broke. Are you going to crank up the printing presses?

Should the cities be bailed out by the federal government who has no money, either? Seriously, what are the odds of them paying it back? Do you want your taxes raised so some cities who can't control their spending ways get federal money?

You know this is about the 201o elections, right?

Which was the problem with the stimulus bill. It was all temporary solutions to an economic problem. Provide funding for 1 year, then next year the question comes up again.. HOW DO WE PAY FOR IT... Except this year, they are further in debt becaue they didnt deal with it last year..

I am not convinced that State and Local governments have cut to the bone like they can and should. Too often I pick up the newspaper and read about different local programs that, while beneficial, are not necessary. I do not like to see a person lose their job, but the role of government is not to ensure jobs, it's to ensure continuity. Too many blanket organizations are receiving taxpayer funds to operate, and I believe its high time to cut back on those items that we want but don't need, and concentrate solely on those items that are absolutely necessary. Until then, I don't support further federal intervention in State and Local budgets.

Nah the diabolical plan hatched for retribution over retarded deregulation-- they're going to raise taxes to 80% for red states. That's fair. If we have to listen to Tea whine, I say lets give them something to whine about.

How about we let the local and state governments learn the pains of not living within their means? If they need to learn not to spend too much.

The federal government also needs to stop taking money from the states. Every time Washington increases spending with a new government program it takes more money away from the states.

If the states think they are in pain now, just wait until Obamacare fully kicks in. If you owe Tony Soprano money, don't be surprised when he comes knocking in the future and asks you to dance for him. If these states take more Fed money they are just asking for it. And when Fed programs put the states in a hole, they do it to make the governor the bad guy who raises your taxes instead of the President.

Regarding the Colorado Springs issue, there is more than meets the untrained eye:

Denver Post Article: COS turning out streetlights to save on the electric bill

They won't tax themselves to do these things.

No they should not be bailed out. Where I live we have high taxes so we can pay for all our stuff. It is about time Republican cities like Colorado Springs learn that if you do not want to pay taxes you don't get services.

In Colorado, the cities do not fund the public schools. School districts are a different entity altogether. The school lunch program is primarily funded by the Dept. of Agriculture, not the school districts.

Well they have cut them in COS, to a far greater extent than your sarcasm implies. My daughter is a physical therapist there. She has lots of clients who can't drive and rely on public transportation. It's hard for a pt. to get to the clinic when they have to schedule around the bus system with the minimal service they have.

This tired old crap again? What shindigs are you talking about? What old stadiums/arenas are you referring to?

In Colorado Springs, it's about getting the ultraconservative taxpayers to ante up a little more for public health and safety.
