I just saw a very powerful, shocking movie called The Stoning of Soraya M. It is based on a true story.
It is a indictment of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The horrible persecution of women there is LEGAL. It is permissable according to Islamic law. And that disgusting regime is a theocracy, governing according to those laws.
The fact of the Islamic Republic being appointed by the UN to oversee the rights of women is a farce and a tragedy. It is an insult to all those who respect human rights.
I highly recommend this movie. Especially to the defenders of the Islamic regime in Iran on this forum. It would be a wake-up call.
How could any open minded person have a problem with this?
"Without fanfare, the United Nations this week elected Iran to its Commission on the Status of Women, handing a four-year seat on the influential human rights body to a theocratic state in which stoning is enshrined in law and lashings are required for women judged "immodest.".......
Does anyone here think that MAYBE the rest of the committee could influence this representative from Iran to try and enact more women friendly laws in their country? Why should influence go only one way?
I think it's good to have someone from that backwards, women hating country on the committee...maybe we can then show them their ways are wrong and hurtful and they may be able to bring change to their country.
No, I don't think that the UN has successfully influenced human rights gains for women anywhere on this planet in the past 35 years. If the UN comittee has sucessfully done so then please enlighten me.
Pardon me if I don't hold my breath while attempt to dig up find examples.

I meant that maybe the rest of the COMMITTEE might be able to influence this particular representative so that he can then go back to his country and perhaps enact change in the way women are treated.
I know you'll probably think it's 'biased', but it's an interested read nonetheless.
