So do you claim what Lincoln is reported to have said about the role of government as well?
The legitimate object of government is ``to do for the people what needs to be done, but which they can not, by individual effort, do at all, or do so well, for themselves.''

And? Just what is it you are saying the government needs to cast us a line on? What is it, exactly, that you feel We the People are failing so miserably to do for ourselves? I don't, personally, feel the need for the feds to come to the rescue of my family and myself, and what the Feds HAVE been tasked with to do, they cannot do. So what should we poor Americans be pleading with the Feds to do for us, that they CAN do and WILL do, with any ability anyway? Sheesh, another "why does'nt the government DO something" supporter. Like they can hit their a$$ with both hands as it is.
Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus during the way, arrested protesters, and allowed the whole sale slaughter of citizens who had nothing to do with the war.

It was George H W Bush who proposed during his Texas Senate race in 1970 that rather than those on welfare not be able to work that the government train them and help them to work and supplement their incomes where necessary. Texas elected the Democrat candidate instead.
I think Lincoln would have been satisfied with the Republican position.

I think that's a very pithy description of the role of government. I don't think you'll find many people who disagree with that sentiment, at least in principle. The disagreement comes in deciding those needs that can't best be met by individual effort. For some, that would consist of cradle to grave health care, employment, housing, education, transportation, recreation, and nutrition; for others it would consist of nothing. Most people are somewhere between those two extremes.
