Except Rush is actually correct most of the time. If he wasn't the Left would just ignore him.

Most of us Conservatives laugh at Maher because we realize how truly insignificant he is.

Bill Maher is a comedian for christ's sake. Nevertheless, lets examine the facts. USA consumes 10 times the amount of oil Brazil does, yet the USA is only 30% larger in population.

... AND WE CAN ALL THANK GM FOR THAT, FOLKS!

The Streetcar Conspiracy - How General Motors Deliberately Destroyed Public Transit (http://saveourwetlands.org/streetcar.htm - broken link)
How General Motors Deliberately Destroyed Public Transit

In 1920, 90 percent of all trips were by rail, chiefly electric rail; only one in 10 Americans owned an automobile. There were 1,200 separate electric street and interurban railways, a thriving and profitable industry with 44,000 miles of track, 300,000 employees, 15 billion annual passengers, and $1 billion in income. Virtually every city and town in America of more than 2,500 people had its own electric rail system.

--------

It is ironic that taxpayers bail out GM - the major culprit in destroying America's prowess in electric rail transport, and who helped shackle us to dependency on petroleum.

Yes, he made a mistake. It wasn't major. Nobody died because of it.

And W T F does this have to do with Iraq or populations? The subject is Bill Maher and his absolutely false assertion that Brazil got off oil.
It isn't "absolutely false"; compared to the U.S., they are substantially, though not completely, off oil. The statement was an exaggeration of a fact that is true and well-known, specifically that Brazil has a more viable alternative-energies program than the U.S.

At least Brazil is working on it (huge sugar cane based ethanol fuel development) while we protect the oil and coal companies from any significant competition. We could make the changes necessary to reduce out carbon based fuel use if we wanted to do so. We will want to do so when our top 1% decide there is money to be made and the results will not reduce the exclusivity of the class structure. Until then we will burn ever more coal and oil and too bad about the rest of the world.

Why they included an ignorant fool like Maher on a grown-up news and commentary program is puzzling.

Maher typifies the permanently adolescent "progressive" thinker, whose sources of information so often turn out to be second-hand urban legends and a quick surf through Daily Kos, Mother Jones, and the Democratic Underground -- not unlike the behavior of chimpanzees who groom each other's fur constantly, searching for edible nits and bits of salt.

As Alexander Pope warned, and as the truly educated among us is aware:

A little learning is a dangerous thing;
Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring:
There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
And drinking largely sobers us again.
Perhaps Maher wasn't 100% correct on this issue concerning oil. However, George Will has no room to criticize him. George Will has made a bigger fool of himself by giving erroneous information concerning oil!

Anyone remember this big blunder?

Given Cheney's reported correction, will George Will follow?
June 13, 2008 6:06 pm ET
SUMMARY: The AP reported that Vice President Dick Cheney's office has acknowledged that "he was mistaken when he asserted that China, at Cuba's behest, is drilling for oil in waters 60 miles from the Florida coast" -- an assertion Cheney took from columnist George Will. Does Will plan to offer evidence in support of his claim, or will he issue a correction?

Trying to acquire a foothold in the American oil patch, a Chinese company is closing in on a deal to buy stakes in a few drilling leases in the Gulf of Mexico from a Norwegian company, an executive close to the talks said.
