Yep. It's not necessarily a 'religious' thing though, it's a cultural thing. With females, the family has to pay a dowry and they lose the woman to the man's family. With a male child, they receive a dowry and get to gain a new family member. That means that the parents will be taken care of in their old age. If they have female children, they will have nobody, since the woman essentially belongs to the man's family.
