Greed.
Not just now but going way back. Not only what it's done to us economically but look around you in most cases and instead of seeing open land or even mom and pop stores you see MacMansions and big box stores. Malls. People are never satisfied--they want MORE. Corporate greed, personal greed, greed on all levels. Political greed. Maybe someone else can express this better but I can't do it without writing a book!
