It not only depends on where in the nation a person wants to live but also if they want to live in a city or countryside. Since the Red states are almost all limited to the South [except North Carolina\ Virginia & Florida] and Midwest, most of the rest of the nation is much more liberal. Almost every large city in America is liberal even if the outer areas are conservative. Hate to say it but for the most part the least interesting regions are Red with more Bible-belt types and less emphasis on education. The progressive regions are, of-course, Blue and where all the major cultural and intellectual thinking occurs. Personally I prefer the excitement of the urban regions especially if they are in liberal states like California\ New York\ Illinois.

NY, CA and IL are indeed very progressive. Taxes are so high in NY that sometimes property tax is as high as your mortgage payment, wow, very intellectual indeed. In CA, they sent some school kids home on Cinco de Mayo because the American flag is deemed offensive especially to illegal immigrants, so we don't want to hurt the feelings of those who were never supposed to be here in the first place.

IL, a state known for its dirty politics, one of the most corrupt states in the nation. I am amazed by how intellectual and progressive these states are

You're right. There's good and bad in every area. The quiet and calm of the countryside can be very soothing to a city-dweller & people tend to retire in areas that are less hectic. What's interesting is that there are even rural areas that at least vote liberal but live a country lifestyle. Mostly in marijuana growing counties.

Lets not forget people..the smartest states and people are liberals. The most educated states are liberal. It's also true that conservative states cry about how socialism is bad and taxes are bad, and then they turn around and take most of the government aid. Conservative states are the poorest yet they vote to support republican agendas that have nothing to do with helping average people and instead are all about big business and corporate profit. Ohhh boy..will cons ever learn? Why would anyone want to live in a conservative state other than maybe the natural beauty of the midwest and rocky mountains? Of course the liberals are the ones trying to preserve that natural integrity.

That makes no sense. You're full of it. You just threw in that part about illegal immigrants to add more justification for your views. Why would a public institution like a school take the sides of illegal immigrants? You don't know that mexican american kids in the school were illegal. That wouldn't happen anywhere. Hispanic kids should be able to have a day where they don't have the symbol of "imperialism in the name of freedom" rubbed in their faces, but they wouldn't people home knowing that the kids were illegal. Bend the truth a little more to get your point across why don't you?

It's all relative I guess. When I lived in MA, people thought I was conservative because I bellieved in low taxes and fiscal responsibility from our government. Now that I live in TX, people think I'm liberal because I believe prayer/religion should not be taught in public school, and that no one should be fired from a job because of their sexual orientation. I hope I always stay in the middle.

That is the most stupid thought ever posted.

Exactly.

Increasing population density seems to translate into increasing liberal thinking though what do I mean by liberal? A conservative will read that sentence and think of one thing while a liberal will think of something different. We need to define these things before we reach any kind of consensus, but when I think liberal in this context, I'm referring to being more tolerant of people's differences and more inclined to allow differences to blossom. Its opposite would be to try to link diversity with conservative thinking--they don't go together. This is why larger cities tend to be more liberal than the rural areas. Breaking up the states along red/blue lines is, as another poster reminded us children, not a good idea since every state is anywhere from 60/40 to 40/60. You can't paint any state in just one color.

I myself would prefer to live in a medium sized or small city (say 50K to 500K) in a beautiful area. The only other consideration would be whether the overarching political ideology of the state would impact my life negatively there. I could live in Kansas, Montana and Utah, but only in one particular city in each. There are 17 other states that I would never consider.
