How's about a worker with no pension paying extra taxes to fund another worker's pension ?

How about someone choosing a low paying job BECAUSE of the pension? You had that choice too, if you had wanted to make it.

They are not low paying anymore..that's old news.
Average public worker makes about $70K. Public worker salaries have shot ahead of private workers. ($70K public vs $60K private).

And many private workers had their pension yanked from them with NO choice.

Federal pay ahead of private industry - USATODAY.com (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-03-04-federal-pay_N.htm - broken link)

This is exactly what is going on with Greece and the austerity measures.
The workers are being cut back and have to work longer and they are protesting and rioting. Same going on in Portugal and Spain and Ireland but they are just protesting without the riots.

Where I live the average teacher makes 40,000 a year. They also start out around 30,000. I don't think anyone would call that a high paying job.

Also, teachers do not just teach 8 till 3. They have to be at school early and leave late, they do extracurricular things, take papers home to grade, contact parents at night, and plan their lessons. I don't know why anyone would begrude teachers their mealy salaries.

As far as the teacher's union being bailed out, that money will not go to the teachers. Teachers are paid by the state or the community they work in, not by the union.
Teachers get paid what they are worth. They are offered a contract and they accept it or so no. Just like any other job.

They know years before they get hired what they will get paid and all the extra stuff they must do and they still agree to it. So they get paid what they are worth or they wouldn't do it. Period.

And lots of other people have work obligations after hours also. You don't hear us crying.

It's more than a lot of other people make.

Plus they only work a 190 days a year. Get 3 months off in the summer. A week or two at Christmas. A week in the spring. Off everyday at 3:30. Great retirement benefits. Great health insurance. Job security.

All that is included in their compensation.

With that said, if you negotiated your contract, that included a pension that you've paid into and then oops find out there's no money in that pension. How would you take the news?

Couldn't the same be said for Social Security ? Only we didn't get to negotiate.

Do you have any idea how ignorant this post is??

Teachers are not paid by their unions, so it is ludicrous to suggest that Obama is giving money their union. Ludicrous and ignorant.

You do realize that VERY LITTLE of any money that is earmarked for education actually makes it into a teacher's pocket, don't you?

Obama is NOT proposing to give a penny to teachers' unions. The title of this thread is deliberately inflammatory.
