There are out of status people from every country in the world in America but Mexicans are the ones being stereotyped as violent. The student overstays are not considered criminals. Americans hire these "criminals" everyday without fear of violence. You can technically say that illegals are guilty of a crime but to claim that simply be illegal makes you a criminal is false.

Is a teen who shoplifts a soda a criminal? How about a jaywalker or speeder or litterer? They broke the law but are not considered criminals.

By the letter of the law, yes they are criminals. Why do you find this concept so hard to understand? Prosecution is another matter, but breaking the law with an action makes it ILLEGAL.

Don't want to hijack the original thread, but just wanted to say that the ACLU is an absolute disgrace to this nation and has been for about a decade. They are an organization who have gone LONG past their sell-by-date. What was once a wonderful organziation who championed so many good causes, now looks to defend anything that will get it a headline by defending the indefensible.
