Actually, I believe that articles indicate that he died on the Mexican side of the border, but was shot on the US side.

The Berlin Wall guards shot their own countrymen as they attempted escape across their own border to another country which more or less welcomed their arrival. Completely different situation in my opinion.

Some articles say that the rock throwers were on the Mexican side - which makes sense - throwing from a distance to harass the Border Patrol who were arresting their friends. More details will come out.

The scene unfolded & was seen by pedestrians on the international bridge:
Update: Border Patrol Agent Involved In Shooting Placed On Administrative Leave Pending Investigation - News Story - KVIA El Paso

According to a witness who did not want to be identified, the Border Patrol agent was trying to restrain one of the teenagers that was trying to cross the border illegally. At this point, she said, some of the other teens ran back into Mexico and one of them started throwing rocks at the agent.
The woman said that is when the agent started firing his weapon. She said she was unsure if the teenager that the agent allegedly shot was the same one that was throwing the rocks.
"I just thought it was really wrong that he was firing a gun into the Mexican side when there was no one with a weapon," said the woman. "The kid didn't hit him with a rock and I don't believe the kid that was killed this evening was the kid who threw the rock."

I would have no problem with using a 308 Winchester to protect my country.

Ha, Ha, Ha, protect your country from a bunch of shoeless peasants with your 1000.00, 308 Winchester. What a sad, sad, joke.

Ah!, the next step is advocating and justifying the shooting of a bunch of peasants. Men Women and Children. We're inching closer to the great socialist democratic republic of 1933. Good Post Chromekitty. I wouldn,t have believed it if I hadn't read it with my own eyes. Shame.......upon us all.

From the posted links:

--U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Doug Mosier said preliminary reports indicated one person was shot Monday evening on the U.S. side of the Paso Del Norte bridge, across from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

--"It started as an assault on a Border Patrol agent," said Special Agent Andrea Simmons, a spokeswoman for the FBI in El Paso. The FBI is the lead agency in the case because it investigates assaults on federal agents.
About 6:45 p.m., a Border Patrol agent was attacked before he fired his weapon, Simmons said.

From the looks of it, this mystery anonymous woman who witnessed the incident doesn't believe a sledge hammer or rocks are considered deadly weapons.

If they were "doing their job" they would have reported the incident. When an officer discharges his weapon he's supposed to report it. Instead they kept quiet about taking pot shots and wounding a man who was running away. I do believe their punishment was too severe.
