Default Okeechobee Living

In looking at the map of Port St. Lucie my eyes wandered west to the town of Okeechebee. I am a now retired and like to fish and wondered what the town is like to live in. Small for sure but what about the town itself, the people, housing etc. Might be safer for hurricane season. Has anyone visited or can share an opinion I would appreciate any input.

Sid

I spent several good years growing up in Okeechobee. For a small town, it is great. If you are into fishing then it is the place to be. I have never liked many of Florida's small towns but I've always made an exception for Okeechobee. It is a small, quaint town that has everything you need (Wal Mart, Home Depot, Typical fast food restaurants, several good local restaurants, hotels, ect.) I love the lake and think it is beautiful. Nearly 100 years ago it was struck by 2 Hurricanes devastating the area (And the whole Lake Okeechobee Area) but seems to be somewhat safe from Hurricanes. In 2004 Hurricane Frances and Hurricane Jeanne made a direct hit. Frances was a CAT 1 and wind damage was minimal but the rain was terrible. Jeanne caused considerable wind damage but nothing like Hurricane Andrew did in South Dade. Okeechobee is close to PSL as well as WPB. Okeechobee has pretty much all the common churches (Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, Pentecostal, Church of Christ, Non-Denominational, ect.)

I don't know what it is about Okeechobee for me. I guess because I have many fond memories of it.

More info:

The people of Okeechobee seem to be friendly. You have a lot of country people who work in the agriculture business as well as a large hispanic population that also works in the ag field. You also have medium amount of upper class professionals living there. The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office and Okeechobee Police Department are both top notch professional agencies. I'm not sure how the housing market is right now but I doubt prices are that expensive.
