Well group,
Sold my house in New Orleans overnight. Now to move. I am going the Penske route and hiring local packers and I remember the forum advice some months ago about the merits of Penske, Uhaul and Budget. I have a friend that used Penske and I will take her advice but I thought I read that UHaul has a lower tail gate height, and that would help. Of course if anyone of the companies had a lift gate that is the way. Also what about moving blankets and straps, do you rent, buy? Never moved before and the distance is a little daunting to think about. I know the forum is a great asset and always turn to you for advice. We are two 67 year old seniors and need to move and find a short term rental there so we can have a base from which to buy a house. Ideas?

Sidney

Hi Sidney and good luck on your move to Port Saint Lucie. When we moved here two years ago, we stayed at PGA Village for 1 month. Rent was 1500.00 per month for a one bedroom condo. The next three months we rented a two bedroom condo at Ocean Village on Hutchinson Island for 1200.00 per month. Ocean Village is right on the Ocean. Both came in handy since we needed somewhere to stay while we waited for settlement on our house. As far as blankets and straps you can rent them when you go to pick up your Penske truck, they have them there.

Default Moving to PSL

Yes, 1200 sounds better, especially I will have everything in storage and I don't know how much that will be for a 7 room house. I am worried about storing my grandfather clock though. It was made in 1820 and is an English Long case regulator style and worth about 10k. As I recall her the storage units are not liable for theft, no insurance, It is 98 inches high. Oh well, I will have to work on this one. Disassembled it is probably only 6 feet, maybe thieves will pass it by if they break in. I know I will not keep my guns in the locker for sure.

Sid- don't worry about the clock, just leave it at my house. I'll take good care of it!! LOL- I'm sure it will be fine. Rent the blankets/pads- they are very inexpensive. Call the local hospitals for boxes- they have the best ones vs. banana boxes, etc. Also, I would call local moving companies both there and here and see how much they would charge to pack & unpack the truck. It was so worth it when we moved! Good luck and keep us updated on your move! Congrats too BTW!!

Ocean View rentals web site is slow and the internet keeps trying to send me elsewhere. Could you possibly send me the link?

Awesome! This thread already answered my questions as for looking for the same thing, only catch is we'll need a place that's dog friendly to stay while we home search. The wife and I are about to sell our place here in Austin and head out that way. She'll be transferring though her employer so at least one of us has a gig lined up. Reading around the PSL section here it seems as though everyone, at least on here, there is welcoming and genuinely nice.

Congrats on selling your house, Sid! I'll add a couple comments for your consideration. If you are thinking about a short-term rental at Ocean Village or one of the other oceanside communities, keep a couple things in mind. First, if your priority is to get away from it all, relax, chill, vacation or even molt, an oceanside rental is fine. However, if you need to shop, attend events, handle business affairs or do any other number of things necessary when setting up house in a new area, driving to and from the ocean will be a time-consuming pain, not to mention the additional expense of putting more $$ in your car's gas tank. Bridges are few and far between. There is no bridge from PSL to South Hutchinson Island. Trust me, it is a looooooong drive. If, however, your priority is to find a permanent home and time is of the essence, you'd be better served to stay more centrally located inland. JMHO. Also, keep in mind you'd be moving here at the beginning of hurricane season. Now I know you are from New Orleans and remember Katrina, so you'd know that if a storm threatens here, the beaches are the first areas that must be evacuated. You don't need the additional aggravation and expense of finding a second place to stay while you're finding a first place to stay, do you? Consider doing that every single time a strong topical storm threatens. (Plus your grandfather clock would definitely not appreciate the salty ocean air.) Just something to think about.

Anyway, good luck to Sid and Sean both and welcome to the area.

Default Moving to PSL

Inland yes, I like the idea of the Ocean view but certainly in the next 4 months there will probably be something windy out there. Can someone recommend inland rentals or a site to find them? I need furnished, two old people no pets.
Again, thank everyone that has chipped in and helped us. For those that may not know we have been in the same house for over 50 years and have no idea how this works.

Sid
