If memory serves me, Grouper is a sort of Drum. A fish that is a relative of Redfish, which is a solid flesh type of fish. Where I used to live near the Gulf Coast of Texas, folks would catch and eat Sheep head, Redfish, and Drum. Grouper wasn't caught too often there as far as I know. Don't know why. The only ones I have ever seen were at Sea-Arama at Galveston. In fresh water, there was a fish called Gasper-gou, if I spelled it right. It was a fresh water drum that roamed the rivers, but wasn't that popular to eat.

Actually that is a Florida/Southern thing, too. They used to serve it here in a local fishermans/ construction workers type bar near the causeway.
My husband is from TN and if they didn't make biscuits and gravy, they would do the SOS in a pinch. g was an inexpensive way of feeding a bunch of kids.

Any new ideas on great places to get fresh "English" or "New England" style fried fish and chips? Tried Tin Fish..good, but not quite right. Went to the New England Fish Market....good, but Still not what I'd call superlative.

I don't think I've seen a single place down here that uses Cod. That's probably why it just isn't quite "New England." I get frozen beer battered cod at Sam's club, a bottle of London Pub malt vinegar, and cut up my own chips.

The Roadside Restaurant at the north end of 27th Avenue in Vero has great fish and chips, they have beer battered cod. For $9.95 you get three pieces of fish and two side dishes. They are only open for breakfast and lunch, but are open til evening on Fridays. Get the fish basket, not the fish fry - the basket is the cod.
