Are there any community gardens in PSL? In a gated community is it possible to have a vegetable garden? Or would a container garden be the best alternative? And another question, what is the growing season for a vegetable garden?

Hi. I'm not an expert gardener, but most of what we plant (tomatoes, broccoli, Kale, lettuce,) we start planting around the end of Nov. (After hurricane season).

I believe there was a plan for a community garden somewhere in the middle of PSL but I don't know if it ever came to be . Call city hall on Monday and ask

I dont think any HOA will let you plant a garden in your yard. Mainly because it obstructs the mowing and can't be moved.

Best to have a window box type or some smaller hydroponics.

Contact the Univ of Florida extension Service. They man an office at the Morning Side Library most afternoons and have a permanent installation on Picos Rd in Fort Pierce. I can provide more information if necessary. They have a current program for container gardens.

Default Vegetable Gardening on the Treasure Coast

Yesterday, I went to the University of Florida Extension Office at the Morningside Library in PSL and picked up a flyer on Sustainable Vegetable Gardening that reads as follows:
The University of Florida, Martin County Cooperative Extension Office has installed a demo vegetable garden area. Included in our demo area are Hydroponics, Hydro-Stackers,Aeroponics, Floating Gardens and several other Unique Sustainable Gardening Techniques.

This area will be open to the public on FRIDAYS between 10am and 12 PM. There will be volunteers available during that time to give you the tour.

This area is located at: Martin County Cooperative Extension Office, located at The Fairgrounds, 2614 SE Dixie Highway, Stuart. 772-288-5654.
For information or directions visit www.martin.ifas.ufl.edu or contact Pat Bonis, coordinator at 772-288-5654.
ADMISSION FREE.

Bring a camera and notepad to record some great ideas. Now is the time to plant vegetables!!!

May the sun always be at your back and the soil under your fingernails.
Sid

Assuming the HOA does not control the lawn service, I would think vegetable gardens would be OK if you live in a house and not a condo. My friend lives in a gated community that has a fairly strict HOA but she has a good sized vegetable garden in her back yard. She pays for her own mowing service, and has the garden along the edge of the yard so it doesn't get in the way of the mowing.
