I saw this story on the local news and immediately started imagining just what these thieves were thinking. I love 'dumb criminal' stories, and you have to admit: it's a clumsy way to make off with stolen property, since all the packages on the truck were similarly boxed/wrapped up and you really have no way of knowing what's in 90% of the boxes unless you have the time and patience to sit down and unwrap every box and look inside them. Since you're in a very traceable, very obvious UPS truck in a public place, you really don't have time for that. I'm guessing that's why the truck was abandoned three blocks from where it was stolen (at least that's what the reporter said), since they realized pretty quickly that they were really going to have to do some work (basically ripping open hundreds of wrapped boxes, hoping there would be valuables in some of them) if they wanted to make this worth the effort. They likely realized time was NOT on their side and cut their losses.

That may be; it also may be that they knew exactly what was there if the truck had just made a pickup of outgoing packages somewhere that shipped valuables. Sometimes a return address is all that's needed to have a pretty good idea of what's inside.
