Plenty of opportunity for Nurses and Teachers don't have that hard of a time finding a job. You will do well here. PSL is great despite what Moderator cut: others says.

I want to hear good stuff for a change! Let's make a list of all the PROS why you would move to PSL?
I'll tell you two of my pointers -
1. Brevard Comm College is right in the area. Nice college for refresh courses or career path.
2. The Unemployment office/One Stop Career Center (new building) offers abundance of assistance, super friendly counselors and I had the feeling there was some hope.

Indian River State College is even closer than Brevard Comm College, and now offers four year degrees. FAU has a satellite campus in Port St. Lucie as well. The Harbor Brach Institute in Fort Pierce is also great for marine biology majors.

I've heard that as a nurse, she can get a job just about anywhere. That USED to be the case with teachers (and I'm a Spanish teacher, too) but it does not seem as easy now. I've heard lots of horror stories about teachers being laid off mid-year - and by May I used to see lots of jobs posted; now they are very few and far between, at least where I would WANT to go.
To the OP: I wish you the best of luck "escaping" the mountains. Maybe I'll see ya there...

Port Saint Lucie / Tradition weather?
I'm from NH and considering moving to Florida. I've researched myself to death and discovered a little town called Tradition. I realize I'll have a hard time finding a job and will probably have to commute for 30-60 minutes, but I can deal with that (hopefully). What I really want to know is about Hurricanes, Tornados and especially possible flooding. It seems that Tradition is built on and around a series of lakes, rivers, etc. and I wonder what happens when you get lots or rain?

I live in Tradition and you will find a lot of posts by me about Tradition in general. We are built with an entirely different infrastructure and had NO flooding in last Septembers really bad storm in which rain sat on us for days. Many other areas of PSL were flooded, badly, with closed roads everywhere.
Tornados are a rare occurrence in any of this area. We have water spouts out along the ocean (not near us) and there are some that do touch down, but that's rare.
Hurricanes, well, we all have them to deal with when you live in Florida that's a given. Tradition is not located next to the ocean and our homes are pretty new. My home turned 2 last December. All of our homes in here CBS construction, not frame. All the homes have shutters. That is a plus. As in any hurricane we all still do what is necessary to keep ourselves safe just as anyone else should. Hurricanes in Florida can come from our coast or the other, you never know. You keep watch and prepare accordingly.
Tradition is made up of different communities with our own shopping, restaurants, planned events etc. and located right off I95 for easy communiting to anywhere.
If you have any other questions about Tradition, feel free to message me if you'd like.

Thank you FlaLadyB!!
This is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I'm hoping to get my elderly father to move down to Tradition and live with me. He's in relatively good health but his eyesight isn't too good, especially at night, so driving long distances, especially in a big city or for long distances, is very dangerous for him. He's nervous about Florida because of all of the Flooding, Fires and mostly Hurricanes. He's afraid we would lose everything we own if a hurricane came around. Hopefully, this will ease his mind a bit to know that the houses are built to withstand most hurricanes.
Now, I just have to find an accounting job in a nearby city, and I'll be all set. Thanks for you input.

Ouch!!! I've lived up north and down south. It is more laid back here in PSL. Not all the hustle and bustle with SOOOO much traffic. Yes PSL is growing.... I'm not going to say its the best place in the world(I love it) but to raise a family its great. In years to come we will have all the things like down south.
