I would never consider living in PSL if I could afford Vero. So what if there are retirees? It's not like there are no kids here. Retirees mean stability and calm. Our schools are undergoing expansion construction I pass by it every day. The local theater is offering children's theater all summer instead of adult subject matter so there must be kids here. The Sebastian mayor just announced on the radio that some schools went from C to A which is a big deal for them.
I would not rule out Vero by any means. PSL has loads of families and with those loads of families come loads of teenager problems, foreclosures and right now there are single family homes for peanuts because they can't unload them. Further, PSL is out in the middle of nothing so you get to drive through traffic, pretty far just to see water. Living in the middle of subdivisions of strip centers isn't exactly a Florida vibe. For that matter, you could chose some much better cities like Lakeland, that ar inland but have a much better community feel, culture and a stronger infrastructure. See posts by gypsychic for that.

RSW,
Thanks for the comments,,, I take all to heart.
That is why I posted PSL, Stuart, Jensen Beach... as I want to hear feedback to those areas.
Helps me out a bunch your comments... keep 'em coming.
I have to narrow down where to look... I initially was looking from St Augustine down and that is a few hundred miles... so this helps, Thank You

I know....it's very challenging. I flew back and forth for months and came here and still am not sure where I really want to end up. But luckily I have no kids it's just me. Free bird
You'll have to make a few trips.
Sign up for Spirit airlines. You can get fares for $1.00, $8.00, $24.00 !!
Being along the beach may not really be the most family friendly. Go read Gypsychic's posts about Lakeland to see what I mean. But it's right in the middle. I'm just saying, it's very tricky with the children element.
But you cant go wrong with Vero. Maybe bored but not wrong ha ha.

You're welcome. One detail, you sign up giving your email address and they email you all the time. Sometimes even at midnight so pay attention.
That's the free one.
OR...you can sign up for the club I forget the name, for like, 24.00 and you get special sales that other non club members can see.
The club membership thing is much better I found.
Good luck! YOu have to book right away, the sales are limited. And it's tricky getting a round trip so have two windows open checking both directions LOL

Greetings, everyone, from our condo in Indian Harbour Beach. Earlier I had posted on this thread about looking for areas of interest in south Brevard County. I returned to FL about 2 days before Fay arrived and spent that week finding a place to rent. The good part was at least I knew which areas didn't flood!
My first area of consideration was Viera/Suntree. But I just couldn't find the right place and fighting the traffic on Wickham Rd could only get more difficult in years to come with the layout of the area.
So I moved over to the beaches to look at condos and was very impressed. One thing I did find out after locating here is that if you're a surfer, you'll want to look carefully at where you locate. Our beach has sandstone and quite a lot of shells and wouldn't be a good surfing beach although I hear it's fine somewhat north and south of us. We're about a block to the beach and go walking on the beach almost daily so this has been a great choice for us.
My FL beach history was with Pinellas County and it was so very, very busy over there I wouldn't consider living by the beach. It's not nearly so busy here and from what I gather, isn't all that bad even at the height of snowbird season. Where I'm located, A1A (the beach highway) is a four lane road and that helps traffic flow immensely. I hear the schools are great and each little beach community has a recreation center with plenty of activities for kids and adults. Beachside has many housing developments for families as well as the condos which tend to be ones without the kids.
I'm in total agreement about renting over buying right now. We have a condo just under 1300 sq ft. Both a garage and a carport for $950 a month and a small courtyard (for gardening) plus a screened patio, which is incredible when you consider just condo assn fees, insurance and tax alone, to say nothing of an actual mortgage.
We've been here three weeks now and are still getting established. While hunting for a place to live, I kept hearing about the beach atmosphere which people couldn't truly describe. It's an ambiance of a laid back lifestyle where locals tend to know each other, such as the fact that already we know the owners of three different restaurants. My husband enjoys tennis and is making friends at some great courts. He's also into karaoke and we've enjoyed a local restaurant that has a family night karaoke as well as the later night ones. We've been attending different churches with still more choices to consider.
Since we're retired, jobs weren't a big consideration. Outside of that, I can't imagine anyone not being happy with FL. However, even though Brevard County is new to both me and my husband we had each individually lived in other areas of FL and knew we are truly Floridians at heart, if not by birth.
