Is it a wise idea to live so close to a nuclear power plant facility? Are the beaches safe to swim? FPL's reactors on Hutchinson Island are right on the beach.

Well, they've been there for more than 35 years with no one even thinking about them, so I guess it might be safe. Of course it's safe to swim in the water, why wouldn't it be?

The bacteria around the city is a lot more dangerous than turkey point canals. Besides, the area around Turkey Point isn't a wealthy or desireable area anyway.

He's asking about the St. Lucie power plants, twin nuclear plants on Hutchison Island in St. Lucie County, directly East of Port St. Lucie. Turkey Point is down South somewhere. The area around the St. Lucie plants is the mega-expensive ocean-front condos.

Honestly, I had same questions.
Turkey point is South of Miami, Cuttler Ridge area. You could see it from Key Biscayne which is pretty far away.
Seems very, very close in St. Lucie (after 9/11 anyways)
Hell, so what, I guess. You can see a nice overhead picture from Goggle Earth.

My houses are 10 miles from the plant... They have a good safety record, and I love the $70 monthly electric bill (my NY bill is $400 a month!!)

I dunno if it's safe. I have a friend who lives on Hutchinson Island, Ft. Pierce, near the plant, and her husband died of leukemia. Could have been any million things that contributed to the leukemia. Or not.

The St. Lucie Power Plant on Hutchinson Island is very, very safe. Esthetically, it is less of an eyesore than a 25 story condo.

There are no known, or reputed, cases of cancer in, on, or around the plant.

I ride my horse on the beach directly across from the plant and we play in the water and he (the horse) has not mutated.

When I was a teenager, the area near the plant was secluded and made a great place to "play hooky". We all lived. (Only cause Dad never caught me.)

My father was a builder/heavy equipment operator in that plant for many years and he is going strong at 71.

The area around the nuclear plant is probably the cleanest and safest in the whole county.

This is a great place to live and play. I take my dog to the dog beach where she runs free near the power plant. It is safe and clean. It is hard to think about living anywhere else. Look at the snow on tv back east. I am glad I am here. Spent day on the beach enjoying family, clear air, warm weather and peace. At least here on a sunny feb day in florida.
