desirable area
There is a nice area called "White City", more of a rural feel, yet close to evrything. One great area is called "Park Trail Acres". It only has 3 streets and all are dead end cul-de-sacs. The homes are very much above average. It is hard to find any for sale in "Park Trail Acres". All the houses are very well maintained.
Directions:
Midway Rd to Oleander Ave. Go north on Oleander. It is the 2nd road on the left. That takes you to Heron Ave.(very nice) The other 2 streets, Egret and Ibis are off of Sunrise.

I'm not a fan of St. Lucie West anymore- was nicer before all of the businesses moved in. My friend has been trying to sell her home in Lake Charles and its been on the market for a year and a half. The homes their are just too close together and they're not really that impressive. Honestly, some of the homes there are pretty dated- it was the 'hottest' place in the 80's and 90's but there are some newer communities that have been built since then. If you're going to pick St. Lucie West, I would head toward the PGA/ Reserves area. Nice sprawling lawns, huge homes, etc....
If you're into sprawling lawns and big houses- you may want to also look around the Southbend area (specifically at the homes located near the water). I think that entire area is really nice- the area is not exactly 'hidden away' but it seems to set itself apart from the rest of PSL.
I like Tradition because it has a nice mix of single fam, townhomes and shopping. I still think it has too much of that 'contrived' feeling and in some areas the homes are just way too close for my taste but it all depends on how comfortable you are with that.
Didn't catch if you have kids in school but the western most areas (tradition and slw) will get you into some of the A rated schools in the area (I happen to work at one). I'm not sure where the kids in Southbend are zoned...

PGA/Reserve is nice, but I also like the "Heatherwood" development (Phase 1) off cashmere. I like it because it seems that all the houses are independently built, and it's not cookie cutter (Heatherwood phase II, on the other hand, is more traditional gated community).
So, ask a realtor if anything is available in there.

Undesireable Area in PSL?
Are there areas of Port St. Lucie that are considered undesireable, where drugs and crime are more prevalent? If so, can anyone cite those areas? My wife and I are looking to relocate in this area and would like to know the parts of town to stay away from. Any help would be appreciated.

A photo I found online of the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant, an inland power plant.

The names have changed over the years but stay away from the Windmill point developments. Not sure if its still called 'windmill point' but thats been known as a drug area for years. Its located out west (past the turnpike).

Parks Edge
The name for the old Windmill point is "Parks Edge" The area is much better taken care of then years ago. I don't believe that what you are saying still holds true.

We live off Lyngate and Morningside and love the location, bought that in 1995 and the house next door in 2002. We are selling the house we own next door and its a 3/2/1 well under that $150,000 price, so you should be able to find an affordable house in the price range you're looking for. I don't think I would personally be looking for a condo or townhouse, I've been there and done that. Homeowners insurance is not that bad here either, we don't fall into a flood zone here, and even with 3 hurricanes we only went up maybe $400 to $500 from where we were, but we did put hurricane shutters on the houses and new garage doors and a lot of other stuff to help.
What we love about the area is that we are close to the hospitals and shopping and our street is on a cul de sac. Most of the neighbors have been here for years. We back up to a greenbelt (will never be built on) and we can watch the fireworks from the back porch on the 4th of July.
