Something about living in a place called "White City" just sounds so politically incorrect.

It's just an old name, the city name for mailing purposes is still Fort Pierce. I believe that consists of the area around US1 and Easy street, Indian River Estates maybe?? Or it could be around Edwards. I'm not certain exactly what the area consists of.

I was only joking of course! There's a city called Yankeetown in Florida too. LOL

Anyway, I just saw a couple of listings in Indian River Estates and they're older homes, built in the late 1970s, with nice lots. I love homes with character and can't seem to find one that's new without spending a fortune. As long as a house has a newer roof, wiring & plumbing and has been updated, I don't think it really matters. I figure if a house has lived through all the hurricanes in 35 years, it must be pretty sturdy! Guess I need to see an area without passing judgment by what I read online, although the comments on this board are always welcome & helpful. I plan to drive to Martin County this weekend to get a feel for it. I think the best plan is to stay in a short-term rental for a while.

I grew up in White City - Indian River Estate specifically. At one time IRE was a nice place to live, but I do not recommend it today. It has turned into a "renters" neighborhood and many of the properties are not being maintained very well.

From what I can see Ft. Pierce is trying to redevelop. I don't know if they will succeed or not but at least it looks like they are trying to make the change. The only worry I would be concerned about is whether I was on the FPL system or Ft Pierce power. I have heard that Ft. Pierce power is much higher than FPL and not as reliable. If you are considering a move I would check out as much as you can and ask your agent every question you can think of no matter how stupid it may sound.
