Default HGTV Green Home Being Built in Port St. Lucie

So it looks like this may be old news, but Port St. Lucie (Tradition) is the site of this year's HGTV dream home. There's a neat video at the HGTV link:

HGTV Green Home » Archive » It’s Announcement Time!

It shows a lot of the St. Lucie Treasure Coast area. The comments are interesting for two reasons:

1) Never underestimate the number of people who move based on climate and witner weather, and

2) There's more positive reviews for PSL than negative. Lots of residents and family of residents who love vs. only a handful of "I hate PSL it's awful!" stuff you get here on this forum of negativity, which is always nice to hear.

Would be nice to win a house.... but I doubt many people who win a 2 million dollar house could afford the taxes!

1. I dont think that's necessarily a good reason to love to FL though.
2. Tradition is a nice area. It reminds me of where I live in Orlando. Same type of thing.

The walk-thru that they did in the video was actually in SC. The house that they showed under construction was in PSL, but the other video of the green house and the walk thru with that family from Bradenton were the ones that won the 1st green house located on the coast of SC.

I am just curious. If someone won that house, will this someone be required to pay ~1 million dollar income taxes on top of property tax in order to keep the house. If it is true, only rich people should be allowed to enter the drawings. Am I right about tax? Any input?

I would never want to win one of those houses. Look at that ABC program where Ty what ever his name is because I don't watch, gives people houses. Most of the time the peoples problems are caused because they don't have the money to fix up what they have. Suddenly they are given something that they can't afford either and most end up selling the home. I think that is cruel to people because they get the illusion that they can go from horrible to wonderful and be able to make it. Should you win that house I would do a great deal of research to find out how much the free house is going to cost me before I accepted it.

I'd imagine you're right. The winner might be hit double time with taxes: income taxes for the prize that is equal to the value of the home, and property taxes for the house ongoing.

For a million dollar house you're looking at roughly 20k in taxes/year.

The HGTV package is around $800M, so yes, you would have to pay income tax on the winnings plus high RE taxes each year based on market value. The winners on HGTV win BUT really don't end up living in the home. They have buyers ready for the "winner" to sell at deeply discounted price. I'd love to live in a totally green home, though.

So true! I cannot understand the appeal of entering these type of drawings. Unless you have the budget for it, I don't see the excitement of winning something that'll cost you. And those home makeover shows are a riot! They feature families who are going broke because they're dealing with medical issues, coping with unexpected deaths and other terribile financial circumstances yet the cost to maintain their newly 'made-over' homes are just astronomical. In some cases, it was never worth it to begin with.
