Vegetation Stays Green in Winter? - Port St. Lucie Area
Hi there,
I have searched the net and have been unable to find out if the grass stays green and whether or not the leaves drop in the wintertime in the Port St. Lucie area. Can someone who lives there let me know?
Thank you!

The vegetation stays green so long as you water it. We only had pine trees and palm trees in the backyard when I was a kid, so I don't remember the state of deciduous trees in winter.

It's brown now because of last week's frost but should be green by next week. mLeaves don't drop off the trees.

Sorry, but yes, the leaves do drop - depending on the tree. Maples drop ALL their leaves and Oaks loose most. From there, it depends on the tree.
As I type this I am lookng out the back door at 2 bald Red Maples

Really? I'm looking at oaks with their leaves. I don't think I've ever seen a tree drop it's leaves around here.

The Oaks are a little confused this year because is WAS really warm for a while. But, yes, the do drop. Depends a lot on the breed. Water Oaks loose more that Live Oaks just as an example. But Maples loose 90%.

I don't think Maples are native to this area. At least in Stuart, I've never seen bare trees, except for after a hurricane.

Swamp maples & red maples are native to Florida from top to bottom. Most people who are transplants (no pun intended ) don't plant them in their yards because they do lose their leaves, & they want the "tropical" look for their yards since they live in Florida.
That's probably why you don't see many or none at all.
My neighbor's live oaks are shedding their leaves like crazy & getting ready for the new leaves to pop. I've got them filling my gutters & blowing all over the place!!
I love those trees, but they make a HECK of a mess!!

My Mango and Avacado trees got hit with the frost. They are very young trees. I hope Wednesdays weather does not finish them off.
