There is no utopia and we understand that. But all the info you have provided helped us on locations. I really want to find Peterson's groves. We went to Hale's one day. Great oranges. They were so juicy.
When is the orange season in full gear?
Good luck to you in JAXX. We have a friend that lives in that area. They love it.

LOL no, what do you expect from kids? They think work is a 4 letter word. Too much MTV on the brain. They try to sound like grown ups when they're anonymous but always get carried away and give up their little secret.
I love getting money at the end of the week or month. Call me crazy
I'm not selling my condo just yet I can come back here on weekends if I want to. It's paid for so it's not that big a deal to pay the basics on it until I'm ready to do something else.
I look at everything as an adventure. I quit and moved to Greece before too. LOL
Peterson's is going south on 66th from where you are just before you get to the mall on the right. I think the prime time for them was Jan till a month or so ago but they still have good juice oranges and other citrus. The old guy there is a FL classic that's why I want you to go to that store.
His buddy who hangs out there gave me a great tip on making meatballs he said use club soda!!! He was bringing home made lunch over to Petersons guy and I smelled it an commented on it. He's right! (if you bake them before simmering in the sauce, that's how I do it...) My kid loved them.
You're going to have a great time here it'll take a year to even believe you're really a resident. The big adjustment for me was the slow pace. Like the CVS clerk stopping to ring you up to do something totally unrelated. AND the Walmart return line is always super slow for some wierd reason. You have to time your shopping trips when you're still on Northern speed. My mother always said "what do you expect there's a bunch of rebels down here" and she was right so after a few months straight you don't notice it as much.

BTW read this thread and follow Tall Rick during hurricane season.
They used to run a thread in the Florida section but moved them to the weather section last year.
Pick up your basic stuff as soon as you get here. If your house is a new built it's probably Miami Dade good....and can withstand very high winds but you can still lose power and stuff. OR have a projectile perhaps. The garage is where you don't want to store important things.
Did you see last year in the storm a small tornado collapsed an equestrian center in Wellington?
A couple of blue tarps, nails, batteries, power center at Sams for 80.00 or generator if you want, lights that run without power, a couple of battery operated fans, some canned food, water, and even a grill if you arent bringing one and it's on your list get it early.
JUST in case LOL.....Vero got it very badly a couple years ago...
I kept my perishable things in rubber totes like photos and stuff when I moved here it was May 1. I also keep a couple totes ready to leave the house with my papers and important stuff in them till November.

Let's stay on topic. We can discuss the topic but not the member, okay?
If you don't like something, state your reason why. We are all entitled to our own. No one is so right or so wrong for what they feel.

our home is a 1990 home. The roof was replaced in 2005. After the "big" one. The garage has a safe room. What do you when it a hurricane 1, 2 and 3? Do you leave or "weather it out" so to speak.
Do you place your shutters on the window's for a cat. 1 or 2? I know they are simple questions, but just want some input.
thanks

That depends on what kind of shutters you have. If you have accordian shutters you can wait till the last minute to make a decision. If you have the clunky ones that I have (for now) you may consider putting up the hard ones 24 hours before any storm and making the decision as to the rest when the storm gets closer. You want to be able to get them up before the wind starts becuse then it is too late.
If your going out of town either hire someone to put them up for you in the event of a pop up storm or put them up before you leave. No one will complain (can't legally) during hurricane season if you have shutters up.
The thing about Hurricanes is they never go where they are expected to go and the damage does not always depend on high winds. Some of the most devistating storms are slow moving hurricane 1 storms with a lot of rain. Cat 5 storms usually move through quickly and though the winds can do a lot of damage they are in and out in a few hours as opposed to lower slower ones that stick around for about a day.
In the end it is a judgement thing. As you get more experience with storms you will be able to make those decisions for yourself. As for me who has been through more than I can remember living all over the Gulf coast and in Typhoon prone Guam, I say shutter for every storm.
If you can afford them or they do not detract from your home, your best bet is to get Accordian shutters. They are the absolute best and easiest to open and close. It takes just minutes to shutter an entire house.

How can anybody recommend Vero Beach to young families and kids when it has the highest concentration of sex offenders in Florida? One minute it is Utopia and the next it has a huge crime problem with sex offenders to boot. Besides the person making these recommendations is much older and did not even raise kids in Vero Beach. They are a retired transplant. Just doesn't make sense. You can't have it both ways. You have to take things with a huge grain of salt on here. I don't think I would ever move to Vero Beach based on what I've read here. Much more research has to be done. Besides the sex offender problems there are no jobs. In fact the people who recommend Vero Beach are now leaving because they cannot find jobs. It is just a retirement community. Many people moved to Vero because it was much cheaper than other areas such as Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, etc. It is not billed as a first choice for anything. I just don't get it. But keep your doors locked and good luck.

Stevep111, thanks for the advice. We have the metal shutters that you have to install yourself. And not to worry, we will not tape our windows .
PSouth, thanks for all the stats concerning crime. We live north of Columbus OH and have our fair share. All of our kids have "left the nest" so to speak. And yes, our new digs has an alarm system.
Do you by chance know of any good mexican restaurants in the area? We have one here and will miss it terribly. thanks for the help.
