OP,
There's not one "Vero Beach" -- there are two.
In no particular order...

The first Vero Beach is the barrier island ("beachside"). If you have a hefty load of $$$, aspire to be on the society pages of (both) local pseudo-newspaperish publications and/or don't mind not-very-friendly people (IMHO), you might like Vero Beach #1.

It's actually a pretty darn nice place -- but, see above paragraph... nice doesn't always = a good place to land.

The beaches, however, regardless of your income, are absolutely beautiful!

The second Vero Beach, over on the mainland Florida/USA, via one of two bridges, is pretty much what you could find anywhere else in Florida without trying very hard.
Nothing special about it (IMHO). (I really don't mean to offend anyone, but...)

Actually, yes, there is something special about it, and that's its proximity to the great beaches over on Vero Beach #1.

There's only one Vero Beach. These days you can find an inexpensive island home as well as a pricey mainland home. We've got friendly and unfriendly people. Just like this board... some are friendly and helpful and some are always looking for an argument. My single negative take on Vero is that we're not near any big city but then the trade off is not much traffic to talk about, even it season it can't compare to south Florida as far as crowds or traffic.

Realtor dot com has eighteen single houses on central beach under 300,000 , starting around 249.

There are many others for much less but they are condos and townhouses.

"Inexpensive" as in not expensive... There are homes on the island in the low threes but they won't be pretty. For somewhere in the high twos or low threes you can either be the ugly stepsister of the island or the belle of the mainland.

Definitely RENT first! We moved here (PSL) almost a year ago and bought. I don't regret buying because I love our house and we got a steal! However, I've found the longer I'm here, the less I feel like I would ever want to raise a child here. This is a great place to retire and if you're young and single without kids and plan on staying that way for awhile its great also but in my opinion, not a great place to raise children.

Please state your reasoning why PSL is not a great place to raise children.
