Well first and most importantly...schools. The schools here are not where I would want my children to go to school. Obviously the most important education starts at home however, the schools here have not scored well statewide.. Second, and this is just my opinion, south florida is not a place to be raising children. I know I will get a lot of heat for this but I don't care. I thought this is where I wanted to raise kids however after having lived here for almost a year I quickly realized that my midwest values and traits are not reflected here. It may just be me... I want my children raised in a positive atmosphere. I would DEFINITELY retire here or live here if I was a young single or young couple.

Some places I agree with you bluestar but all of south Florida isnt the same there are small towns little subdivisions and even neighborhoods that are great for kids. My best friend moved to South Florida with her son and he has florished in the school he's in and never has an issue with the town they live in. Im lucky and im able to put my son in a private school but I know many people with there kids in a public school and yes there are some issues but isnt there issues at any school? You cant really expect Florida to have midwestern values. Every area/state has there own values and thats why people move to certain places or move away from certain places. I understand that this area isnt for you but theres other people who it works great for.

I HOPE nobody is bothered for me posting here but,..here goes!
I moved to Vero Beach on May 1st, 2007. I moved here from Colorado.
I moved mostly because, I wanted to be near my family ( My sister lives in Daytona Beach, on the ocean and my Mother lives in Tavares).
Second, I thought, dang, who wouldn't want to live ON THE BEACH?? RIGHT?
I really thought, and, convinced my husband, we would be here forever...on the ocean..diving, swimming, shelling...just looking at the view and enjoying life!! He agreed and, we moved.
We put our home on the market just weeks before we moved. Our home is in Canon City, Colorado (35 miles west of Pueblo and 40 mile south of Colorado Springs). We have 2 acres, 4 beds, 3 baths, 3 fireplaces and....a tennis court!! WHAT was I thinking??????
I LOVE Canon City,...even though I grew up in Denver(just 2 hours away).
Any how,....here we came....WOW!!!!! My Husband (who grew up in Panama...surfer dude then...thought), "Gee, the water is a little too close!!". My Mom and Sister set it all up for us, JFYI.
HMMMMM!!!! My Mom and Sis spent most of their time at my place in Vero! Gosh, they were sooooo happy!!!!
ME? I thought I had died!!! Everything but an alligator bit and fed on me!! I am talking Fire Ants, No see-Ums...etc!!!! I looked like I belonged on a Leper Colony!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!!! I thought I would lose my mind but,....I lived directly on the beach,.....as a matter of fact, as someone mentioned...Gloria Estafan was my neighbor!!
It's just water I thought and, HUMID beyond belief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My landlord, bless his heart, was/is wonderful!!! We had a 2 bed 2 bath home( 2 kitchens) on 9 acres and only paid 1,000.00 a month!!!!!!!!
We lived at 12300 highway A1A..the first house that has the intercoastal across the way ( exactly 4 miles North of Disney Vero Beach!!)
I hated it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I was on the Treasure Coast on a private beach. I did love the sunrises and sunsets but hey,....the only thing I truly loved was..Captain Hirams!!! I would ONLY eat on the water because,...ANYONE can eat in a shoppette on the cement!!
I must say.....I LOVE Daytona Beach where my Sister is!!! I love the intercoastal and ocean places there much more than Vero!!
We moved back exactly 1 year later ( May 2008) and moved back into our same home!! It was a very expensive lesson and...I am scarred on my legs because of the stupid bugs!!!!
BTW!...My Mom and my Sister have been here 2 more ties in the last year!!
They love Florida..my Sister also has a boat docked at Down the Hatch.
I don't miss diving..I don't miss the beach or the shells. I DO miss the Sea Turtles!!! That's it!!!!
Humidity, sand, bugs...keep um'....no offense!!

SheridanL.
So do you mean you do not like Florida? My mother-in-law thought that Florida was not for her until she moved from the Philly area to Ft Lauderdale in 1984....

Ok here it goes in my honest opinion.. and this is possibly just the area I live, however, I am fed up with the way people are here! I can't even drive down the road without someone riding my back bumper because I'm driving 55 in a 45 and they want to go faster than that. The person working at the local gas station staring blankly at me when I say "thanks! have a good day!" and NOT responding. The person in the pharmacy cutting me off in the middle of my question and being completely RUDE to me. The teller at the bank acting like I'm bothering her to make a deposit. The work ethic down here is ridiculous! People showing up 2 HOURS LATE for work and acting like its no big deal! I was apparently raised differently than a majority of the people here. I wouldn't raise children here because I wouldn't want them to think that any of that is normal or acceptable behavior. I've lived in a few places and visited many more and this just doesn't happen on a regular basis like it does here.
Florida is a beautiful state with so many wonderful things to do and see. I just wish the people, in my town at least, weren't so darn rude!

Might be where you live or just your personal experience. I've met just as many friendly as rude people in Florida and I've lived here for 15 years...2 years on Sanibel Island, 13 years in Bonita Springs and just got to Vero Beach a week ago. Not sure I want to stay here, but it's only been a week. Unfortunately, I had to pay for 2 months in advance.
I agree with you about traveling at the speed limit, but I had the same trouble in MA and NH. I'll be going 40 in a 35mph zone and someone will still be on my tail.
I found people in Naples to be rude, especially in the upscale areas. It's always worse in season, so they're not really Floridians. I was in retail for several years in both Naples & Fort Myers which was quite an experience but, since I never worked in stores anywhere else, I can't draw a fair comparison. I think people in general are just plain nuts!
By the way, if you don't get personal & friendly service at a bank, I suggest you change banks. That's why I left Bank of America, but everyone at Colonial Bank & BankUnited in Bonita Springs is very courteous and I'm often addressed by name when I enter. If a teller acts as if you are bothering her, then I blame poor management for allowing such behavior. If this attitude continues, I would report the teller, but everyone has a bad day.
Regarding the gas stations, today I stopped for gas at a Shell station on US 1 North on the way to Sebastian. I bought some lottery tickets and chatted with the man behind the counter. For me this is very common, but if it's busy I usually just pay at the pump and leave. I can't count how many times I've stood in line at Publix and struck up a conversation. I find the people who are in a big rush are usually the ones on vacation! Gee, I'm already starting to miss Bonita. However, I've found most people in Vero to be pleasant.

Right now I am soooooo itchy! I wish I knew what was biting me. 11 bites on my 2 feet in only seconds and several more around my elbow, on my thighs and back. There's even one on my face! Must be no see-ums, since I can't see anything! I've had the same problem all over Florida. I think some people are magnets for biting insects. In 2001 I was on vacation in Costa Rica and didn't get a single bite. As soon as I got back to Florida, I got several bites. Go figure.

SheridanL, I think you've posted this same whine before. I remember reading it. I live in Vero Beach and guess what??? No bugs! We get sprayed quarterly and the only bugs I see are dead. You want to talk bugs? Go north to MA or NH with it's black flies, mosquitoes, green heads, etc. I go up there for vacation and come back looking like I have the measles.

verobeach: We use to have a place in Cape May NJ...UNTIL... we got tired of the green heads bitting us .....
As a kid my parents use to go to our grandmoms home is Avalon NJ and it was great. THen there was Brigantine NJ.....YIPES....
We use to bleed from the green head fly bites but my brothers and I use to think that our mom took us down the NJ shore when we were bad so the big giant green head flies would bite us and take all the nastyness away.....hahahahahaha.....Maybe that is why they remained so nasty nowadays...
