Fort Pierce gets bashed way too much. Like any town, there are places to avoid and there are places to enjoy.
Just avoid the area to the north with the "lettered" streets. Locally known as "The Avenues" or "Alphabet City".
Downtown Fort Pierce has been thru a tremendous revitilization. There are numerous great restuarants and the Sunrise Theater has a great line-up of shows. There is the Manatee Observation Center and the Backus gallery down on the water. And during the cooler months, there is a green market e very Saturday. And Friday night is Friday Fest with street vendors and live music.
As for houseing, there are many nice neighborhoods to choose from. If your thing is rural with acreage - we have plenty to choose from. You can get a very nice 2/3 on 7 to 10 acres with a barn for $275,00 to $500,000. If you want a deed restricted community with a golf course there is Panther Woods, Holiday Pines and Gator Trace, just to name a few. If you want a simple, middle class, safe neighborhood, there are too many to mention.
We are also home to Indian River State College, a four year, highly acclaimed college. Our beach area is currently undergoing a huge renovation too.
Don't poo poo Ft. Pierce until you have spent some time there.

Fort Pierce is still pretty bad. I have a friend who lives on Hutchinson Island but has a Ft. Pierce address and she lies. She tells people she lives in Vero Beach.

I have lined in St. Lucie County since 1972. I work in Ft. Pierce and have a ranch in Ft. Pierce, I have NEVER been the victim of a crime. Most of my friends are deputies and they will tell you that other than the Avenues, Ft. Pierce is just as safe as PSL. Your friend on Hutchinson Island has a Ft. Pierce address because THAT IS FT. PIERCE!

Moving to attend Indian River State College
I use to live in Vero 5 years ago, because of the string of Hurricanes I left and went back to Ohio. Couldn't take the cold and snow anymore. I am a single mom of 3 and wanted a bigger city than Vero with a selection of younger people (I'm 40) so June of this year I moved to Jacksonville. I don't like it, traffic is bad schools are to large and the beaches suck .
Since I'll be going to IRCC in Ft Pierce I'm torn where to move. I don't want a 45min drive each way to go to school from Vero, but I want a safe environment and good schools for my kids. I can afford 1,000 monthly rent for a 3bdrm. I would love to be as close to the water as I can get. I've been to Ft. Pierce and it looked really ruff. I don't want my kids seeing a bunch of riff raff everyday. Any suggestions?

A lot of the threads are not old. IF you plan on moving anywhere, much less Ft. Pierce...get here and look around IN PERSON first! NO, it hasn't changed.

I've lived in Fort Pierce (moved from Coconut Creek, Broward) for 2 1/2 years. Yes, there is crime, but in my community, Bent Creek, we aren't exposed to the crime.
I'll tell you like this, yes the crime is there, but the crime blotter is not as frequent or as harsh in some other larger areas, i.e. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, etc. I work in Broward still and work for a newspaper there. I read the local section often and the crime makes me appreciate leaving the area.
