Did you take a picture of the nuclear power plant. 5 miles east of Port St. Lucie.
Everyone says it's safe and all but higher cancer rates won't show up for decades. I don't trust our government to tell the truth.
It's already been there for decades, and nothing (It was there when I moved here 35 years ago). I'm sad that you live your life with such distrust and fear.
Besides, you raised this same issue back in February ( link )and were refuted back then. Why raise it again, now? You're not a troll, are you?

WHERE in Port St. Lucie is your job offer, exactly? That can be a major deciding factor when it comes to where you should live, because rush hour traffic can be annoying if you live in the Western part of the city and work in the Eastern (and vice versa).
As far as "things to do," that really depends on what your kids like to do! Are they into sports? The beach? Plenty of theater options in the area, as well as bowling, mini-golf, boating, etc.
When you live in Port St. Lucie you have to view the surrounding areas as an extension of your entertainment choices. Your 17 year old will probably like to go to West Palm Beach for entertainment.
I am really confused about psl, I have heard so many different things about the area and my husband and I are thinking thats the place for us and our 3 kids to move. we are closing on our house in ft lauderdale in 3 weeks and my heart is set on psl but i am hearing some serious horror stories. crime is high pedophiles on every corner, cops are lazy and schools are worst in county. how do i decide on whos right or wrong about this city? my husband has a job already, actually he's a plumber and his company wants him to run a office in that area and south to west palm to expand, so i dont think work will be an issue, also coming from ft lauderdale, can the taxes and insurance be worse than here? I find that hard to believe and with the crime, my husband alone has been mugged 3 times in the last 10 years here and hollywood has so many sexual predators my brother lived next to one for 5 years. so really is psl better or worse than what im trying to get away from? can someone give me a straight answer, my biggest concern is schools. help anyone
spatfam,
You must have lived in east hollywood to witness such high crime, We just moved here from east Pembroke Pines 4 months ago. "becker area" and we totally love the area compared to Hollywood/Pembroke pines. Sure PSL has some flaws "like driving 15mins to find a resturant" But all in all we love it here. Insurance is no where near as high as down south and consider the fact that you can probably buy Double the house for less than what you sold your house for.
As far as crime goes, i havent seen anything here...like compared to down south. i have lived in HIALEAH/OPA-LOCKA/HOLLWOOD/PEMBROKE PINES and living here is more eazy going.
I also work in W.P.B off okechobee blvd, and it only takes me 35-40mins with hardly any traffic. As far as traffic is goes, if you're from the south like we where, you wont have any problem up here.....
I for one think PSL is MUCH safer than lauderdale. There really is no comparison. I never worry going out alone in PSL... I've been here for almost 15 years since I was 13. All my high school and college years have been spent on the Treasure Coast. Yes, the city has exploded, but I admit I will miss it when I move out of the area. Are you looking for a true comparison between the two cities? Can you get out of your contract? Anyone else feel free to chime in after me, but I feel comparing PSL to Lauderdale is kinda like comparing apples to oranges. Just a little confused that's all (plus I'm tired!)

I live in Tradition at PSL. Crime and pedophile are news to me. I guess someone else may be able to tell you more. Tradition is very safe. Cops are definitely not lazy here. Well, my neighbor and his partner are the sharpest shooter team in Florida (#1 title). They try to work with our community as much as possible. I haven't seen such an active police force. I think property tax is a little bit higher (in general, 2.2% in Ft. Lauderdale and 2.5% in PSL ) but the price of the house is much much higher in Fort Lauderdale than in PSL. I like Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale beach. I like to have breakfast on Hollywood beach and dinner on Fort Lauderdale beach. In PSL area, you can access beach through Fort Pierce. I can find some really wild beach to let my puppy run but I can't find anything that I can enjoy food and beach simultaneously. I don’t know anything about school district. Why don’t you come to visit Tradition or PSL? For me, I love Tradition and our beautiful house. I can’t afford to buy the same house in Fort Lauderdale. But Fort Lauderdale has a lot more restaurants/bars and beautiful dog parks. If I can afford and my job allows me, I probably will choose Fort Lauderdale instead of PSL.
...i am hearing some serious horror stories. crime is high pedophiles on every corner, cops are lazy and schools are worst in county.
Crime -- Port St. Lucie has been rated the safest city of it's size (over 100,000) in Florida for 7 of the last 8 years, and is second safest this year. PSL has not slipped; the other community has improved more than PSL improved. It's tough to improve that much when you are already the best. It is also the 8th safest city in the entire United States of its size, and even more impressively, is the 24th safest city in the United States of any size, which includes all those littele Midwest villages we all know are so safe.
Pedophiles -- the state has a website where you can check sex offenders for any zip code. There are sex offenders in every zip code in Port St. Lucie. There are sex offenders in every zip code in the state, and in most cases, there are MORE sex offenders in almost any other location. Chcek it out for yourself -- do NOT depend on what you have heard.
Cops -- the police department in Port St. Lucie is an accredited department, one of the few such that are accredited in the state. The officers are well paid and the city has the pick of highly qualified officers applying from all over the nation. The department beats the recommendations for the number of officers per resident. The department practices wha tis known as "community policing", in which officers get to know the neighborhoods in which they patrol, and are easily able to spot things that are out of line or not normal. All of this is why the city gets such a high safety rating.
Personally, I have lived in PSL for 35 years, and have never locked my doors. As a matter of fact, when there is a nice breeze, we leave the front door wide open all night to get a good cross-breeze. In fact, I don't know where any of the keys are for our house, and couldn;t get back in if I ever did lock it. My wife walks our dogs every night between 11PM and midnight, usually for a couple of miles, although one of the dogs is getting old and her route is shorter at the moment. My neighborhood is entirely typical, just a block off one of the main collector streets, not gated or anything special -- Just another of thousands of house on 1/4 acre lots.
Schools -- do a search on this forum; most residents are reporting the schools have greatly improved. My own "kids" are now in their late 30's, so they graduated from the so-called "poor" system back in 1987-89 . There were no high schools in PSL then, they went to Ft. Pierce Central HS. My daughter graduated from a private, high-academic college in North Carolina (Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory) and my son graduated from Stetson U inj DeLand, one of the two highest academic colleges in Florida (the other is Rollins). Both are successful in their chosen careers. Both were involved with sports (softball and soccer) and band (clarinet and trumpet, and in fact, my daughter is now a high school band director). Neither was ever in any trouble. Remember, the schools are better, now!
St. Lucie County has a higher number of students graduating with an IB (International Baccalaureate) degree than any of the surrounding counties. Lincoln Park Academy, a public magnet school in Fort Pierce, is ranked 43rd in the top 100 high schools in the entire nation.
Frankly, if you have crime or education problems in Port St. Lucie, it is more likely your own fault. I hate being that rude, but it is true.
Regarding my last post, since I am cooking more now, my husband thinks PSL is a paradise for him. Good luck with your choice. I don't think either choice is bad. The property value may hold better in Fort Lauderdale. PSL still has room to grow. Who knows...
thank you all so very much for your answers , we have visited psl like 10 times in the past year and we love it. it is very beautiful and clean and oh so different from here. and yes it was east hollywood. we just want to make sure we are making the right decision because we are leaving all of our family here to find a better and safer lifestyle for us and our kids. we have just a few more questions - whats up with the grinder pumps/liftstations in front of all the new homes? what happens if the power goes out , like i said my husband is a plumber and he said no power to liftstation / no flushing toilets. does psl have backup generators for emergencies? And of course everything is always heresay but he heard theres something wrong with the fpl? are the lines underground? do you have black/brown outs? these are my husbands concerns, and actually him and my son are going back up there tomorrow to look around some more at homes and talk with people there and get a feel for it. thanks again i soooooo appreciate all of you responding so quickly. oh yeah one more ? , i want to live west of the turnpike around california blvd he wants to look east of us1, whats better , im thinking school wise and prettyness west is the way to go, hes thinking east close to the beach , house will be worth more in 10 years . hard one we are not agreeing on this one , am i asking too much of you guys?
