Oy Vey. Here's a simple solution: Become a CITIZEN.

BTW, if I hadn't learned even the most rudimentary words in German when I lived in Germany, I'd have remedied my toothache with Preparation H from the Apotheka down the street from where I lived.

I thought this was a very interesting article. I am not sure how to feel about it. On one hand, my feelings are well, they are only voting on local issues, what's the big deal? In addition, I don't live in Portland, nor even Maine. So in effect, "I ain't got a dawg in that hunt".

My wife has been in the US for decades (resident legal alien), yet retains her New Zealand citizenship as a matter of personal preference and pride of her country. She would never consider voting here, and does vote by absentee ballot in New Zealand elections. She will tell anyone that asks her that the only reason she is here is because of her kids and her adoring husband. Additionally she will tell you that she is quite comfortable with her residence here as the only thing she can't do is vote, or own a firearm which btw she is terrified of.
On the other hand I agree with reloop. I am in Virginia quite a bit (heck it's 25 miles from here, gas is 15-20 cents cheaper per gallon). Does that mean I should be allowed to vote there as well as North Carolina, just because I am there? Logic would dictate that if Virginia's political climate excited me so much, perhaps I should move there, establish residency and get involved. Additionally I was suprised to read that this issue is not restricted to Portland. I would think that if these folks wanted to vote so much, they do like my wife and vote at home, or as reloop says, become a citizen, it is not that difficult a task.

Now see? Your wife is someone I can respect. Likewise, you don't feel entitled to vote in Virginia just because you pay gas tax - perfectly reasonable. She has chosen where she will vote, and doesn't demand to have a say as she has chosen to do that.

I don't know at what point people will stop over-thinking this kind of thing.

"Do unto others..." Has it really become "Do unto others, except me because I'm ______________!" <fill in the blank>?? Ridiculous IMHO.

It never fails to amaze me what is going on here in the USA today. I look around and wonder, what has happened to my country? It certainly isn't the country I grew up in. Not only do non-citizens vote (and not just in Portland...) but to believe some of the accounts, dead people vote, too!

And yet so many people just walk aroundisolated and insulated from it all, as if it were nothing...maybe it IS nothing. These same people would never consider not voting. Good grief! What is this world coming to? Is no one paying the slightest attention?

Portland and San Fran are the two cities voting on this in a week. No surprise there...Portland is truly the "San Fran of the east" (I don't care if they DO try to deny that-- I lived there for many years and know its uber leftist heart well lol).
This is an outrageous idea.

Hey, you guys just made it on FOX's Glenn Beck show! You are not alone. San Francisco and Chicago are also interested in "updating" voter laws to a more "progressive" flavor. This is no surprise, knowing the incredible liberal/progressive indoctrination going on in the public schools in the Portland and surrounding areas. They are pumping the kids out to think progressively and be activists. Good luck and Brace for more!

I can't imaging this will pass in Portland. If people are stupid enough to allow non-citizens to vote on ANY issue they deserve no respect and will get none from the majority of SANE Mainers still left in this state. We ran a thread about this earlier this summer but I can't find it.

If you want to vote, then become a citizen of the United States of America.

It really is just that simple! Non citizen residents are like house guests. They are fine until they start suggesting ways to rearrange the furniture and what you should be feeding them for dinner....then it's time to go before they completely wear out their welcome.
