I really thought this was going to pass. Before I went to bed last night the yes votes to allow non citizen voting in local elections were ahead. To my delight Portlanders rallied to reject this idiotic proposal. There is but one path to becoming a voter in this country....become a legal citizen....then vote all you want!! You can bet the State legislature will address this issue in the next session.
Hopefully the Congress will address it nationally so no more non-citizen voting initiatives will pop up elsewhere. It amazes me that we now have to legislate against blatant ignorance and lack of common sense. These initiatives would have been considered a joke just 10 short years ago and would have been dismissed out of hand. Now we have to deal with them.....

It would have passed... but the people that wanted it couldn't vote for it.

Why was this even on the ballot? It is the epitome of foolishness to even consider allowing anyone who is not a citizen to vote.

Portland is a weird city.

I'm sorry, but this is hilarious! I thought Portland would beat Oklahoma for NOT putting irrelevant, stupid state questions on ballots. I would have bet my house that it's already illegal for non-Americans to vote! heheheheh, I'm still laughing. What a waste of money.

Keep it up Portland, and you'll be talkin' with a twang!

Portland is trying very hard to become the San Francisco of the East. They are getting close to seeing that dream come true!!

This thread will seriously interfere with our desire to retire in the Portland area. How is that even on the ballot? Total nonsense. I can hear Steven Stills singing about people carrying signs...... What the heck happen to people? where are the signs? everybody is just goint to take it? like lamb to the slaughter! Man!

The only reason it was on the ballot was because people polled for it, and received the required amount of signatures. Anything can be put on the ballot if the right amount of sigs are obtained.

Roland there are much bigger problems with Portland than just resident aliens trying to get the vote.
I'd be sure to spend a few weeks there walking around the area to get a feel for the city before I decided to settle there in retirement. It isn't the Portland I knew as a kid.
