Portland Maine is not a huge city. You might be happy in Portland itself. But if you really want a small town feel there are a lot of nice towns around it.

I'm sure others will be able to provide links to housing links. I rent and the website I use is the Portland Press Heralds page. Real Estate in MaineToday.com

As for gov. jobs its best to go to the states website. Also the cities all have their own websites. IMHO the best job site in maine is jobsinme.com. Its where I got my job now!

Best of luck.

Portland with about 65,000 people is by no means huge. South Portland with 24,000 may also fit your needs. Local towns nearby include Westbrook, Gorham, and Scarborough; all under 20,000, with just the right amount of amenities and small town feel.
