Is is just so relative to which tax zone/town/county etc that you live in, but we still feel our taxes are outrageous. And the 8.25% sales tax we pay for all non-food items on top of that is rediculous. Add to that $2.86+ per gallon for gas right now and the $380 electric bill for July, and they're killing us!
I can understand why Maine looks so nice to raise a family. But I Hope you don't expect your energy bill to go down. My uncle lived in texes and came here for a year to do some contract work. 1st, he couldn't belive the cost of housing, 2nd he couldn't believe the cost of electricity

for 2006 maines cost per KH was 16.01 cents and texas was 12.43 cents.

for 2007 state and federal combined, Maines gas tax is 46.7 cents and Texas is 38.4. cents per gallon The difference being maines gas tax is higher.

My 1500 sf split level built in 1978 is worth about 189k. My property taxes are $3600. maines income tax rate 8.5% for income over about 18k and our sales tax rate which includes some food and clothing is 5%, 7% on prepared food.

Maine is geographically a beautifull state and has low crime. We are poor and do have our social issues and finding a good paying job is harder then other new england states. Be sure you know what it is your looking for. Good Luck

Thanks for the info. I know we're exchanging cooling costs for heating costs. I have run all the numbers and we're going to need approx $9k more per year to live in Maine. It's worth it for the quality of life that we'll enjoy in Maine. Money is no issue for us, (thankfully) so we'll bite the bullet gladly to get out of this hellhole!

Other than football, texas has never really jumped out at me as a place I would want to live though i know there are a great many areas to the big state. There are probably some big differences you will see when you get here but thats what makes life interesting. If you came here and it didn't work out no harm no foul. stay for a few years and enjoy it for what it is and move on. Or you may fall in love with it and stay here forever.
