Portland: Love it or Hate it & why?
Would love to here some local opinions on the city.
I am actually coming up for a visit in the next week & will hopefully be moving there in next month if all goes well & I like the city.
I am currently residing in the suburbs of Killadelphia, Pa.

I've been wondering the same thing. You can only gain so much from reading statistics.

you guys need FlyCessna or Coaster or MaineBrokerMan for this....I'm sure they'll see the thread and respond. Try reading through some of the other threads and see if that helps. I like Portland, but I love rural Maine, so I just visit! Actually going down on Thursday!

Moved from Portland after 20 years there and still cry inside. PWM is a gem of a little city. Ocean views, smell and activities. Great restaurants - many ethnic and seafood widely available. The symphony. Decent popular music acts at the civic center and city hall auditorium. Minor league baseball and hockey - the baseball stadium has a Fenway Green Monster wall. Good mall AND a vibrant downtown!! Good night life at the bars and some interesting coffee houses. Skiing and hiking 2 hours away. 105 miles to Boston when you need to get away. Minimal traffic issues for almost any commute. OK time to go cry in my beer!!

DITO!
Cry in your beer if want....just make sure its a shipyard
Whatever reservations I may have about Maine in general, when it comes to a livable city with its own down to earth personality but still trendy eating and shopping I cannot think of many cities that have what Portland has. Portsmith NH maybe but thats it. Anything further south on the water will be to overgrown and pricey. Your first visit should say it all, with a good vibe you'll get an idea of what its all about.
coincedently the former Chief of Police in Portland, "Chief Chitwood", was from philly. A retired detective, he is now the chief of Upper Darby twp.

Nice picture. . .
I asked this question a while back, but - what's Portland like for a Black guy? Does it make any difference for the most part?

Great input so far....I am so excited I pushed my trip up to tomarrow. I going to spend 3 days there just to get a feel. Hopefully the ballclub is in town & I can catch a game.
Any recommdations for a newcomer for some nice places to check out & get a feel for the city or any good places to grab a bite to eat etc....I will be by myself so hopefully there is somewhere I wont feel awkward being an out of towner by himself
Also if you had to recommend the best way to go apt searching what would it be & any areas to avoid?
Looking to spend about 1K a month for a 1 or 2 bedroom apt....

MRVphotog,
Thanks for the amazing photo of a fantastic city!! Where did you exactly perch yourself in S. Portland- near SMTC?
StephenW-
race, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference, amount of freckles, etc not an issue in Portland -thank goodness!!!! Coastal cities are always more tolerant. Portland truly is an incredible small city!

I love the fact Portland has the second most resturants per capita in America. They are everywhere and most are delicious.
