Default Are the black flies bad in Portland too?

Hello - I think I may be accepted to live in the Iris Park Apartments in Portland. If so, I will be moving from Florida (lifetime resident) and I sure hope I can adjust to the cold. About the black flies that are so often mentioned, are they in the city too or do they stay in the rural areas?

I live in central CT -which is not that much different from Portland Me.- black flies are not an issue here- and with Portland being on the Atlantic- they should not be any issue there.

Default Black Flies

Thank you Dragondog. I know that here in Florida the biting flies are horrendous in the rural areas but non-existant in the cities so I was hoping the same might be true in Maine. Thanks again!!

Blackflies breed in moving fresh water only. Mosquitoes breed in standing water. Hence, the blackfly population is worst near moving rivers and streams and has a reduced impact in metropolitan areas.
